#Pakistan🇵🇰 The International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF) expresses its deep concern about the conduct of the recent elections in Pakistan, which have been marked by significant challenges that threaten the very core of democratic integrity and human rights. The imposition of blockades on social networks and telecommunications platforms, as well as credible reports of numerous potential electoral irregularities, cast a long shadow over the fairness and transparency of the electoral process. More worryingly, reported hostilities by elements within the military establishment against candidates, activists, workers and voters associated with the political party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan raise serious questions about the role of state institutions in upholding democratic principles. Such actions not only undermine public confidence in the electoral process, but also jeopardise the fundamental rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.

The spectre of instability fuelled by these undemocratic practices is a source of grave concern, with the potential to plunge the nation into turmoil and conflict. At this critical juncture, we remind all law enforcement and military officials of their sacrosanct duty to uphold human rights and adhere strictly to the rule of law. The international legal framework unequivocally prohibits arbitrary arrests, the use of excessive force, the bringing of false charges, the violation of the right to defence and the abhorrent practice of torture. These principles are non-negotiable and are the bedrock of any society committed to justice and the rule of law. It is incumbent upon all state actors to exercise restraint, ensure accountability and foster an environment where civil liberties are protected and respected.

The International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF) calls on all stakeholders in Pakistan's electoral process, from government officials to civil society actors, to reaffirm their commitment to democratic norms and the sanctity of the electoral process. It is imperative to avoid any action that could provoke unrest or violence, and to maintain calm and non-violence. The international community must unite to uphold democratic values and ensure that elections are not only free, but truly reflect the will of the people. The foundation of democracy is the equal and fair participation of all citizens in the electoral process, free from coercion, intimidation or violence. We demand unwavering respect for these democratic principles to safeguard the future of Pakistan and its people.
