I watched a clip from the Hausa Zalla 2026 Hausa Day event in Kano, where Malam Ibrahim Khalil delivered a speech. As an invitee, one would expect him to say only what would please his audience. No, Malam chose to uphold the truth.

Malam Khalil expressed what many other scholars agree on regarding whether the Hausa are a tribe or a nation. He also questioned the ethnic singularity or purity of those who claim it. Identity is not something fixed or easily established.

My cousin was in the audience. The other day, he openly said he doesn't like Fulani people. Unknown to him, both his parents have Fulani ancestry. He also looks Fulani, like his father, my mother's older brother. In other words, I am more ethnically Hausa than he is.

Of course, we should not only abhor criminals but also call on the authorities to deal with them decisively. But criminality has no ethnicity.

If the majority of criminals share a particular ethnic identity, it still doesn't warrant branding the entire group as criminals, hating them, or calling for their annihilation. Doing so is itself a crime.

Today, Muslims and terrorism are unfortunately almost synonymous. However, does that mean all Muslims are terrorists? No. Generalisation is dangerous. Don't do it or encourage it.

Bad governance is our biggest problem. Once Nigeria gets its act together, peace and prosperity will return and reign. People will come to their senses, love one another, and begin rebuilding their communities and the country as a whole.

Ancestrally, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden were not Americans. Their fathers were from Kenya, Germany and Ireland, respectively. Ilhan Omar and Zohran Mamdani weren't even born in the US! Don't mention Rishi Sunak in the UK...

Love thy neighbour. They aren't responsible for your insecurity, poverty, unemployment and other problems. We are all in it together. Let's unite to confront our common enemies, those who steal our wealth, enrich themselves and give us crumbs.

The gap between Calafiori, Havertz & Saka and their alternatives who started many matches last season (Hincapie, Gyökeres & Madueke) is significant. Keeping the first trio fit for more matches this season is an upgrade without even considering transfers. Maybe the smallest gap is between Calafiori & Hincapie but given the strong defensive nature of the rest of Arsenal’s team, what Calafiori offers in the final third is more valuable than Hincapie’s defending.
