Historic Day in Lasanod

Today, SSC-Khaatumo proudly welcomes His Excellency Prime Minister Xamse to Lasanod, marking the first official visit by a Somali Prime Minister to SSC-Khaatumo

His Excellency Abdikadir Aw-Cali, President of SSC-Khaatumo, received the Prime Minister and his high-level delegation with great honor, reflecting the spirit of unity and mutual respect that defines this new chapter in our nation’s journey.

Over the next two days, the Prime Minister and SSC-Khaatumo leadership will engage in high-level discussions focused on peace, development, and regional integration. The visit will also feature the launch of key development projects aimed at transforming infrastructure, healthcare, and education across SSC-Khaatumo.

This visit is not just symbolic, it is a powerful step toward national unity, inclusive governance, and a brighter future for all.

Back in the early 2010s, I had a Somali friend studying in Türkiye. One day I asked where he was from. “Las Anod,” he replied, then added proudly: “That’s where the Ottoman relics are — someday, we’ll go see them together.” Curious, I pulled up a map and said, “Oh, so you’re from Somaliland.” He immediately corrected me: “No, I’m not.” I showed him the map again, still confused. “But that’s what it says.” He looked at me and said something I’ll never forget: “Don’t trust the map — we’re from Khatumo, not Somaliland.”

That moment stuck with me. And now, years later, I realize how right he was. What he tried to explain that day in a simple conversation is something the world is only beginning to understand. Khatumo is Khatumo.

I’ve been studying and working on Somalia since 2011. Over all these years, if I’ve learned one truth, it’s this: you might not be able to fully unite Somalis, but you can’t truly separate them either. Their ties run deeper than borders or maps.

Ayan is one of the peoples of Somaliland massacred today in Erigavo, Sanaag. Ayaan is the wife of Sheikh Salman, who was also killed in Sanaag 4 days before.

2 people were killed and 3 others were wounded by Somaliland police in Sanaag, Erigavo, after they opened fire to a car with people displacing from Somaliland's target killings in the Sanaag region.
