Dostoevsky (like many of us) was drowning in his own contradictions. And his talent for articulating them was MENTAL

A compulsive gambler, perpetually in debt, adulterous, obsessive, jealous, deeply religious (🫠), yet repeatedly doing things his own conscience condemned.

Perhaps that explains the intensity of his writing. He understood the uncomfortable distance between knowing better and actually being better.

His characters overthink, sin, repent, relapse, rationalise and despise themselves for it.

Sometimes he reads less like someone studying the human condition and more like a man interrogating himself through fictional characters.
