The Plight of Amhara Representatives Under Abiy Ahmed’s Regime :
The brutal repression of opposition voices under Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reached an alarming crescendo, with reports emerging of dire conditions faced by imprisoned representatives of the Amhara ethnic group. These individuals, arrested despite their legal immunities, are now battling life-threatening illnesses allegedly caused by inhumane imprisonment conditions, including torture and deprivation in desert facilities devoid of water and basic necessities.
Christian Tadele, a federal house representative known for his bold calls for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s resignation, and Yohanes Boyalew, a senior regional representative and former Prosperity Party member, are among the imprisoned. Their detention followed accusations of conspiracy and alleged ties to the armed resistance group known as Amhara Fano. However, these charges are widely regarded as a pretext to suppress dissent and silence critics amid the growing unrest in Ethiopia.
Amhara Fano, an armed resistance group, has been fighting what it perceives as a genocidal campaign against the Amhara people. Thousands of ethnic Amharas have been detained under similar accusations, signaling a broader crackdown driven by panic within the regime as opposition mounts.
Both Tadele and Boyalew have reportedly developed chronic illnesses due to their imprisonment, with their conditions now suspected to have progressed to intestinal cancer. Their lawyers and doctors attribute these severe health declines to the harsh conditions they have endured, including physical and psychological torture. Without immediate medical intervention, their lives hang in the balance.
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), despite operating under pressure from the regime, has released statements highlighting widespread human rights violations in the Amhara region. These include arbitrary killings, street shootings targeting civilians, and the inhumane treatment of detainees, particularly ethnic Amharas.
Abiy Ahmed’s administration has been accused of perpetuating systemic violence and fabricating conflicts to maintain its grip on power. The devastating civil war in Ethiopia over the past two years, which has claimed the lives of over a million young people, exemplifies this strategy. Critics liken the Prime Minister to a modern-day monarch, ruling with unchecked authority and disregarding the accountability mechanisms of democratic institutions.
The arrest and mistreatment of elected representatives highlight the regime's disregard for legal immunity and democratic principles. By targeting influential figures like Tadele, the government seeks to eliminate potential opposition leaders and quell any organized resistance to its policies.
The plight of Amhara prisoners demands urgent international attention. Global institutions and human rights organizations must hold Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed accountable for the ongoing persecution of ethnic Amharas and the suppression of opposition voices. The international community should advocate for the immediate release of Tadele, Boyalew, and thousands of other detainees unjustly imprisoned based on their ethnicity or political stance.
As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The international community cannot afford to remain silent in the face of such egregious human rights violations.
The world must act now to end the suffering and demand accountability from those responsible for perpetuating these atrocities.

🚨One of our brave sisters sends a message to the ‘fake Ethiopianist’ opportunist elites. She quotes Martin Luther’s powerful words: ‘In the end, we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.’
