Political scientists widely argue that under the Assad regime, Syria had entered into the status of a “partially failed state” due to the regime’s inability to control its territory, its complete dependence on the Russian military, and the breakdown of public services and the economy (that was operating as a narco-economy)

Under the current government, Syria has instead entered the status of a “recovering state,” marked by the establishment of a central authority, renewed international diplomacy, and efforts toward economic stabilization.

The Western left’s continued desire to rehabilitate Assad’s image does not erase the objective realities of what’s happening on the ground.
