Also, when my grandad (born in the 1920s) looked to his neighbour’s for how to be not poor he took the lesson: go into a stable trade. That worked.

Mass incarceration is our society’s way of trying to make structural social issues “someone else’s problem.” There is no “someone else”! It’s on all of us. Warehousing human beings out of our sight in prison or jail does nothing to right wrongs or address underlying difficulties.
