Today marks 111 years since the Ottoman Empire began the Armenian Genocide, systematically killing an estimated 1.5 million Armenians through massacres and death marches.
This legacy of denial and erasure continued in 2023, when Azerbaijan imposed a nine-month blockade on Artsakh, followed by a military assault that ethnically cleansed over 120,000 indigenous Armenians from their homes. Villages were emptied, churches desecrated, and families fled with nothing.

Hundreds of Armenians were murdered in the Sumgait massacres of 1988. These were orchestrated acts of violence that escalated and eventually resulted in the tragic depopulation of Armenians from Artsakh in 2023.

Forgetting the victims of these crimes allows them to be repeated. As Azerbaijan continues to hold Armenians captive in Baku, I'm calling upon the Aliyev regime to cease its hostile, anti-Armenian rhetoric and actions.

I have just learned that my long-time friend and partner in philanthropy, Ruben Vardanyan, wrongly imprisoned for his advocacy of Armenian sovereignty and safety in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh), has received a prison sentence of 20 years from his captors in Azerbaijan. This is a travesty. It is ludicrous. Those around the world who believe in peace and justice, in decency and fairness, must continue fighting for his release, as I will do. Ruben’s family said it best: this judgment is a judgment against the Armenian people as a whole.
