In a world racing against climate collapse, a new kind of economy has emerged: one where carbon is currency, nature is capital, and pollution can be bought and sold.
This week, as the #AnnualMeetings kick off, Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) brings you this cinematic exploration of carbon market projects in Africa, which reveals how a global system designed to fight climate change can both uplift and exploit frontline communities, forcing a reckoning with whether trading pollution can truly deliver climate justice.
Stories from The Margins: The Visible and Invisible Impact of Carbon Markets in Africa is a documentary film that takes viewers inside this complex, often controversial system, unravelling the promises and paradoxes of carbon markets through the lived experiences of African communities on the frontlines.
During the Feminist Festival of Resistance and Alternatives at the IMF–World Bank #AnnualMeetings, Akina Mama wa Afrika will screen the documentary during a session titled: "False Solutions and Green Extraction: Challenging Corporate-Led Transitions and Market-Based Responses to Climate and Development Crises"
This session will use the documentary to critically examine how corporate-led responses to the climate crisis can reproduce extractive relations, marginalise communities and undermine women’s rights and livelihoods.

As the IMF and World Bank gather for their 2026 #AnnualMeetings in Bangkok, we are bringing the realities behind their economic policies to the centre of the conversation. For more than 80 years, the IMF and World Bank have shaped economic policies that determine who has access to healthcare, education, decent work, food, public services and care, and who bears the cost when these systems are cut.
Economics does not operate in an abstract space. It determines who gets medication, who gets education, whose knowledge is superior, whose work gets paid, who gets to have credits over another’s livelihood, and whose social relations become the norm.
Through our campaign themed “Our Realities and Lives Are Not Your Budget Item,” we hope to bring together our feminist thought that has been challenging the continued use of austerity, debt conditionalities, wage-bill cuts and underinvestment in public services. As feminists, we are here to reiterate that our lives are not your budget item.
✡️Why now? 80+ years of failed economic policies with the "Grandmother’s IMF" is still cooking with the same failed recipe.
✡️Our power: Collective feminist action creates change and demands a feminist reset.
✡️Our role: Every action, big or small, contributes to the movement and the court of history.

Mulungi has been very vocal about her struggles living with chronic illness. Constant intense pain is all she's known her whole adulthood. The disease is beginning to affect her vital organs. She really needs this surgery! Donate & share this poster please. 🙏🏾
You think Ugandans are not already reducing their movements? You think people are not opting to walk to places and car pool? People have to move to work. Majority of Ugandans must leave their homes to find money for the day’s food. We deserve better!
After Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko said she didn’t have 20 minutes to allow the lawyers file bail documents because she was going to pick her child from school, we thought if we filed the documents we would obtain the production warrant for @AloikinOpoloje to appear earlier than the 16 days she remanded her for. She has also refused to entertain this. The reason this time that she mumbles informally is that we “attacked her on twitter” for sending her on remand. Judicial officers and thinking they do us a favor to just do their damn job that is tax payers pay them for!! #FreePraiseAloikin

“a classic example of using trumped-
up charges to chill protected expression, in clear violation of …
of the Constitution”. Thank you @ug_lawsociety@IsaacSsemakadde
This conduct of @ODPPUGANDA and @JudiciaryUG is unacceptable. It must be exposed. It must be stopped.
Africans have become so accustomed to the absence of accountability that we now depend on the deaths of perpetrators to give us the justice institutions failed to provide.

I hope Ugandans who pretend to be surprised when the oppressed celebrate the deaths of the oppressors are seeing the continental sentiments around the death of that Zimbabwean who was literally and figuratively occupying a lot of space in powerful offices.
Such a wonderful & very important conversation on abortion care in Uganda. We still have a long way to go as far as decriminalising abortion goes in Ug. Thank you @ImaniMulungi ❤️🥹 #ThriveWithMulungi

No words can express what the Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi went through during the eight months of illegal incarceration but it’s heartwarming to see that he still can afford a smile!
