The resignation of the chairwoman of the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has sparked controversy and speculation in the country. The chairwoman, whose departure was attributed to medical issues, faced heavy criticism from detractors who argue that she failed in her responsibilities and merely followed the direct orders of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Following the reform after the downfall of the TPLF-led EPRDF, a former opposition figure, Birtukan Midekasa, was elected as the head of NEBE.
