Thrilling #reading Lermontov’s ‘A Hero of Our Time’. Stories of Pechorin, an officer in the Russian Army posted on the edges of its C19th empire. Landscapes, melancholia, wit, philosophy& nihilism. Russian literature at its best with a protagonist you won’t forget. Rate:5/5.

Heroic #reading LeClerc’s ‘Fergus of Galloway’. An Arthurian Romance encompassing classic elements of the genre. A knight sets out to join King Arthur’s Round Table, enduring hardship, executing feats of bravery and finding his one true love. Full of battles& chivalry.Rate:3/5.

Hilarious #reading McBride’s ‘Defending the Guilty’. A ripping yarn & primer on the laws of evidence & the judicial system. Humorous stories of life as a pupil at a criminal set, combining observation w/ a devil-may-care attitude. A must for the any budding #barrister. Rate:4/5.

Amusing #reading ‘Till Eulenspiegel’. Vagabond-prankster Till Eulenspiegel travels from town to town in Medieval Europe causing havoc through the literal interpretation of metaphors, cunning & sh*t (literally). Be prepared to be transported into the Medieval world. Rate: 3/5.

Surreal #reading Beckett’s ‘More Pricks than Kicks’, his debut novel that follows the life& loves of odd-ball Belacqua. Joyce-esque portrayal of Dublin's back-alley pubs, fashionable society& family feuds as the protagonist stumbles from one engagement to another. Rate: 3/5.

Disappointing #reading Booker’s ‘The Neophiliacs’. A blow-by-blow account of English political &cultural life in the decade 1955-1966, applying the psychological five-stage Fantasy cycle framework– from Apprehension to Death-wish. Pity about the Christian ending. Rate: 2/5.

Philosophical #reading Herzen’s ‘From the Other Shore’. Dialogue and essays about the European revolutions of 1848 (eg Paris Commune) and the dark repression that followed. Counter-point to revolutionary zeal and the dead hand of conservatism alike. Unique. Rate: 3/5.
