Deus Beinomugisha to Anne from @nemaug: Is it only gold miners that use mercury? I heard it’s also in health. So what are you doing to ensure the general ban on mercury in Uganda because this law is selective to only miners. #ASMQ22
Deus Beinomugisha questions @tmori42 from @4_dgsm on when they will lift the ban on tin, as it is still being mined and smuggled, hence benefiting other countries at Uganda’s expense. #ASMQ2022
Tabaaro Morris: As government, however much we want money we won't sacrifice the health of even one Ugandan. The mining and minerals law is not going to change.

Large carnivorous fish - concentrate mercury up to 1million to 10million times that of immediate environment.
Tabaaro Morris: As long as mercury keeps escaping one Ugandan child is going to be affected by this mercury every day. How many are we going to allow?

Dr Wabwire concludes by saying that the impact of mercury poisoning on health care is very expensive. For example, you might need dialysis and it costs 1 million per visit. "So, the mercury will eat all the money that you have ever made." He concludes. #ASMQ22
We developed an action plan when we discovered most use of mercury is in gold extraction. The plan enables @nemaug and government to help miners.

“We do not want to make miners feel that we are taking away their food. However, I ask you to step into the government's shoes. How is mercury used affecting the other millions of people who are not using mercury? We need to protect them also.” Morris concludes #ASMQ22
