FORESTRY PS AND CCF LEAD MAZINGIRA DAY CELEBRATIONS IN MERU
The Principal Secretary @Forestry__Kenya, @GMugambi_CBS, and the @CCF_Kenya, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, EBS, today led the #MazingiraDay2025 celebrations in Meru County, reaffirming government commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable livelihoods.
This year’s celebrations clarion call #TurudiPrimoTukadonateFruitTrees calls on Kenyans to return to primary schools and donate fruit seedlings promoting a tree-growing culture among children while enhancing food security and climate resilience.
Speaking at Gitijiwe Primary School, the PS highlighted the significance of Mazingira Day as a platform for action and shared responsibility in conserving Kenya’s environment.
“Mazingira Day is about action and legacy. By growing fruit trees in schools, we are improving our environment, enhancing nutrition for learners, and creating income opportunities for local communities.” said Mr. Gitonga.
During the celebrations, over 13,300 assorted fruit and indigenous trees were planted across Gitijiwe, Baitigitu, and Gankondi Primary Schools, where the two leaders led Mazingira Day exercise with an additional 9,700 fruit seedlings distributed to learning institutions across Meru County.
The CCF emphasized the importance of involving young learners in tree-growing efforts, noting that environmental stewardship must start early.
“When we plant with our children, we plant the values of care and responsibility. They are the custodians of Kenya’s green future,” he said.
“Each seedling planted today is a promise of nourishment and a step towards a greener Kenya,” added Mr. Lemarkoko.
Mazingira Day promotes nationwide environmental action, focusing on fruit trees for their ecological, nutritional, and economic benefits
PRESIDENT RUTO LEADS THE NATION IN MARKING MAZINGIRA DAY
His Excellency President @WilliamsRuto today led the nation in commemorating #MazingiraDay2025 by planting trees at State House, Nairobi. The President, accompanied by the First Lady @MamaRachelRuto, was received by the Cabinet Secretary for @Environment_Ke, @DrDeborahbarasa, and the @CCF_Kenya, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko.
The President and the First Lady were joined by pupils from State House Primary School in a symbolic exercise aimed at nurturing a tree-growing and environmental conservation culture among young people.
Speaking during the event, President Ruto emphasized that climate change is a global reality that must be addressed through practical interventions such as forest restoration and large-scale tree growing. He highlighted the link between forest conservation and food security, noting that sustainable water catchments are vital for irrigation and agricultural productivity.
The Head of State announced that 15,000 National Youth Service (@NYS_Ke) personnel will partner with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers to boost seedling production in all 300 KFS nurseries, targeting at least two billion seedlings annually. He further revealed that 17 mega nurseries, each with a capacity of 25 million seedlings, will be established to accelerate the 15 billion tree-growing campaign.
This year’s Mazingira Day is being marked nationwide under the Whole-of-Government, Whole-of-Society approach, with Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, State Corporation Chairpersons, CEOs, and senior government officers returning to their former primary schools to lead the planting of fruit trees.
Each school is expected to plant at least 2,000 fruit seedlings, contributing to a national target of over 100 million seedlings in Kenya’s 35,000 primary schools.
According to the Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. Lemarkoko, the tree-growing exercise, will continue throughout the short rain season across the country.
Also present at the event were the Principal Secretary for @Environment_Ke, @GMugambi_CBS, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Amb. Prof. @JuliusKBitok, and the KFS Board Chairman, Mr. Titus Korir, among other senior government officials.
