April snow brings May flowers! 🌵🌸

After a seemingly long winter, spring has sprung at Grand Canyon National Park, painting the canyon in vibrant hues! 🌼

Blooming in late April/early May, the vivid pink flowers of Beavertail prickly pear cacti (Opuntia basilaris) along the South Kaibab Trail bring a pop of color to an otherwise muted desert landscape.

The small bristles on the flat pancake-like pads provide protection for this tasty and nutritious plant from predators such as deer and squirrels.

Insects pollinate the plant’s bright flowers that will give way to sweet juicy fruit and a bundle of seeds in the late summer. NPS Photo/J. Baird

SR 64 (Desert View Drive) has been temporarily closed to multiple accidents along the road, vehicles will be stopped at the Yaki Road intersection east bound. Park Rangers are currently responding.
