Vancouver reallocated a small block and overnight it became one of the best spots in the city to watch the game. Cafes skirt our draconian bylaws with a tv on their patio and serve takeout.

Great placemaking isn’t rocket science, remove cars and trust people to handle the rest.

On Monday, crews opened the multi-use path (MUP) on the east side of the stal̕əw̓asəm (Riverview) Bridge!

This new MUP connects pedestrians and cyclists from E Columbia St. in @New_Westminster to King George Blvd in @CityofSurrey.

The sidewalk is free again.

After many months of requests, @Richmond_BC installed wheel stops at the Minoru Gate parkade, beside the running track.

A welcome improvement. A safer sidewalk.

The parking lot still has plenty of room for cars.

No parking spaces were removed.

The wheel stops simply keep vehicles off the sidewalk.

Residents have lived a lifetime of car dependency, and they convince cities to give up public right-of-way for private storage.

This feels like the wrong direction.
Instead of accepting danger around schools and asking teachers or parents to manage it, we should remove the danger itself: safer cycling routes, protected bike lanes, and street design that makes walking and biking to school safe and normal.

Hot idea: Putting an In and Out Burger in a walkable neighborhood would introduce millions of people to the benefits of walkability.
