I love Ireland so much. I want to see her people thrive! Which is why my heart breaks to see Ireland in this death spiral of mediocrity and myopia.

Decades of regulation means there’s no affordable housing for our youth. Driving them abroad. Less youth means less youth culture. And those who leave are the ambitious ones. Which means less entrepreneurship. Nowhere to live, nothing to do, no opportunities. More leave.

Who’s going to do the things that create the growth that creates the prosperity? Well at least we’ve got the social state with the dole and the free education and healthcare. But who’s going to pay for that? We don’t even have our own currency to print anymore. Well at least we’ve got the sweet, sweet American corporate tax revenues. Except the Trump administration's America First agenda is about to stop that in its tracks—and it’s very specifically got Ireland in its crosshairs. And the hapless “diplomacy” with Israel has made us something of a pariah with the new management in the US too, certainly not helping our case.

The above are just a fraction of our problems. Do you think our student union political leaders even understand them, never mind have the fortitude required to address them? I don’t either.

This is a serious downer. I’m sorry. But the first step to addressing such a problem is admitting we have one.
