Illinois is ending its 1% grocery tax, the revenue from which was given to local municipalities. So now towns have the option of putting in their own 1% grocery tax.
The mayor of New Lenox says if they don't add a local 1% grocery tax, they'll lose $1M per year in revenue!
it's OK, as the mayor says, they've "earmarked other tax revenues for the bonds (property, sales, abatements, cannabis etc)."
Apparently you can have traveling baseball tournaments, or you can let your residents save $1M on groceries per year, but you can't have both.
I analyzed the finacnial projections for my town's new $70M sports complex.
- $5M per year debt service for 20 years
- Max yearly operating profit $272K on $2.8M revenue
- Yearly tax revenue from projected "economic impact" under $1M
- Leaving about $4M per year to taxpayers
