@matsonj Check the execution plan. At a guess I'd say your date column is indexed, literal date uses index, use of cast forces table scan.

@bob_duffy Not really, but then my background is MPP systems. True, you do need the 60 distros for big tables, but for small stuff (DIM's), just replicate. Or if you don't need MPP, Azure SQL is fine.
