Re: the recent news about IMF's 'C' grade rating for Indian GDP statistics

First of all, the full PDF copy of the concerned country report from IMF is available on the IMF website, so you can verify the relevant facts & claims yourself.

The report has multiple annexures, one of them is about data adequacy. You can see the tabular assessment on page 113 of the main report, as attached below for easy reference.

India scores quite decent (B) on overall statistics. The key areas of concern are the coverage & frequency of economic data. To simplify it, the C grade is there because India, being a humongous country in population & size, has limited public statistical resources, which makes it harder to fully cover the economy end to end.

As the report points out, India needs better coverage & frequency in the informal sector of its economy. It also notes the steps the authorities & public statistical bodies are taking to address these concerns.

This issue is typical to populous countries like India & China. You'll see a similar C rating in the data adequacy report on China as well.

So, it's absolutely not the case that India is massively overreporting GDP growth. IMF's own forecast on Indian GDP growth in the same report puts it in the position of the fastest growing major economy.

IMF has rightly pointed out the issues of data adequacy in terms of coverage & frequency, especially about the informal sector. Furthermore, it's also quite likely that such better coverage will further increase the GDP growth figure we are seeing now! Because India is yet to fully compute its informal economy with a desirable frequency of surveys.
