The world’s largest coal-to-liquids plant is converting China’s vast coal reserves into higher-value fuels and chemicals, giving the country another buffer against disruptions to imported oil.

🔸The Ningxia facility processed 24 million tonnes of coal in 2025, equal to roughly a quarter of the region’s annual coal output

🔸Its indirect liquefaction process converts coal into diesel, naphtha, liquefied gas, waxes and other products, with some outputs worth up to seven times more than the original coal

🔸China has developed coal-based rocket fuel that helped power the Long March-12, reducing dependence on a single fuel source

🔸Ningxia Coal Industry has also developed 11 high-end lubricant products, while the plant’s core units now operate with 99.8% automated control

With China still heavily dependent on imported crude, especially from the Middle East, coal-to-liquids technologies give it a domestic fallback that strengthens energy security while moving production into higher-value industrial products.

It's Bill Benter. He figured horse racing was just another counting problem. Same math, more moving parts.

He and a partner showed up with $180k and a computer. Benter spent years teaching that computer to guess one thing, the real chance each horse had to win. If his number was better than the odds the bookies gave, he bet. If not, he skipped it.

That's the whole trick. Expected value.
