imo you literally get that “spark” all over again. everything is a new experience to your kid. seeing a bug? coolest thing ever. eating ice cream. amazing. going for a car ride. painting a picture. even every day normal activities like grocery shopping are an incredible experience with them. holidays like christmas, easter, halloween etc all feel like how they felt like when you were a kid again. everything is exciting again because you are seeing the world for the first time through their eyes

The scene with the veteran at recruiting isn't satirical either. In one part because it's a scene from the book devoid of it's narrative context that the Federation puts wounded veterans up front to scare potential recruits into quitting. Because they only want people who are deadly serious about signing up.

The other is that I've know men in the military who've taken grievous, career ending injuries and would say the same thing. It's only satirical to a European like Verhoeven who has no mental concept of pride in one's nation and being willing to defend it with your own body.
