In memory of Antony Price, the British fashion designer whose sculpted, theatrical silhouettes shaped glam rock. Dressing icons including David Bowie and Roxy Music, his precise yet glamorous designs defined 1970s–80s style and left a lasting mark on music and fashion.
Girl's dress of ivory-coloured printed silk trimmed with machine-made lace and blue velvet; England, ca. 1885. Victoria & Albert Museum.
This dress is somewhat unusual in its fabric and trimmings. The printed silk shows some irregularities, and may have been a sample fabric. Textile workers were sometimes given these samples, which had usually been produced only in small amounts, so particularly suited to the making of children's garments. The fairly complex construction of the garment and the bold combination of velvet and lace as trimmings suggests that the dress was made by someone who was an experienced dressmaker.
my moms comments have at least gotten more interesting since i asked her to stop talking about my weight, today she told me my breathing sounds like im crying all the time
When Elsa Schiaparelli turned to Surrealism for inspiration, everyday objects became couture and humor became high fashion. These cocktail hats from fall 1939 are perfect examples.
