Kinare reported that Samant was treating the Express employees roughly: according to Shourie's account, Samant rarely met them, did not patiently hear their problems and could be rude toward them. Meanwhile, the financial promises attributed to Samant were shrinking—from a demand of ₹3,000 more per worker to ₹1,000 and eventually ₹300.

Gradually, workers began questioning how long the confrontation would continue.

5. Kinare helped the Express begin contacting workers individually.

Once dissatisfaction with Samant became sufficiently visible, the strategy shifted.

Shourie explicitly writes that through Dr Kinnare and some Express colleagues, they began contacting individual journalists and workers separately at their homes/quarters.

This is probably Kinare's most consequential operational contribution: instead of trying to defeat Samant through a rival mass mobilisation, the team worked worker by worker, separating the employees' interests from Samant's leadership.

6. Kinare's assessment helped determine when the Express could reopen.

Shourie says that after approximately two and a half months, information reaching the management together with Dr Kinnare's assessment convinced them that they could begin preparing to restart the editions.

That means Kinare wasn't merely helping with outreach. His assessment of worker sentiment was part of the decision-making process for reopening Indian Express and Lok Satta.

7. The strategy culminated in the secret restart.

The Express cleared the 24th floor of Express Towers and arranged bedding. On the selected evening, the operation began and more than 80 workers and sub-editors were brought into the building.

With this small workforce, Indian Express and Lok Satta were printed again. RSS volunteers accompanied the newspaper trucks in case Samant's supporters tried to stop distribution.

Shourie's description of what that moment meant is unequivocal: the printed newspapers announced that the strike was effectively over and that Samant's “terror” had been broken.

So Kinare's role can be stated precisely

The evidence supports describing Dr P. R. Kinare as one of the key behind-the-scenes organisers of the Express counter-strategy.

The chain was essentially:

Goenka → Shourie/Gurumurthy → Dattopant Thengadi → Dr Kinare & Vasantbhai Puriya → assessment of worker sentiment → individual outreach to workers → workers brought back → Express and Lok Satta restarted → Samant's hold broken.

And there is a particularly important distinction here. Kinare did not appear to defeat Samant by matching his militancy. According to Shourie's account, his contribution was almost the opposite: patiently reading the workforce, waiting for dissatisfaction with Samant to develop, communicating that intelligence to

Shourie–Gurumurthy–Karlekar, and then helping establish direct contact with individual employees when the time was right.

This is Arun Shourie's account of Dr Kinare's role in strategizing Indian Express Goenka victory over the man who the entire Bombay business goverment and even media feared. Datta Samant

Arun Shourie’s first-hand account in The Commissioner for Lost Causes (2022). Shourie describes the confrontation from inside the Indian Express management. He says Ramnath Goenka regarded Samant's entry as a union leader as a question of who would ultimately control the paper. Shourie also explicitly records Gurumurthy’s involvement in devising the response.

Shourie specifically says that after roughly two and a half months, information coming from workers and “Dr Kinnare’s assessment” convinced their team that they could begin preparations for restarting the editions. That independently corroborates the central point of Gurumurthy ji’s post: Kinare was not merely an RSS acquaintance—his assessment of the workers was part of the decision to restart the newspaper

Shourie then describes the actual operation: they brought “eighty-odd workers and subeditors” into Express Towers, produced Lok Satta and Indian Express with this small team, and sent the printed newspapers out in trucks accompanied by RSS men in case Samant's supporters attempted to stop them. The initial print run was only about half normal circulation, but Shourie says its significance was that the strike was effectively over and Samant's terror had been broken.

There was then a second battle. Management required returning workers to sign an undertaking of good conduct. Samant challenged this in court and initially obtained an order from Justice Sawant allowing workers to return without it. According to Shourie, H. M. Seervai approached the Division Bench and obtained a stay, meaning even Samant's remaining supporters ultimately had to sign the undertaking.

Speaking at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, Nitin Gadkari recalled:

“Datta Samant led a strike at The Indian Express.”

He then said Goenka stood firm through the difficult situation and “in the end, he emerged victorious.”

Dr. P. R. Kinnare (Kinare) appears to have played a much more central role in defeating Datta Samant than a general description such as “RSS worker who helped the Express” suggests. The strongest evidence have found is Arun Shourie’s own first-hand account in 'The Commissioner for Lost Causes' (2022).

What Dr. Kinare actually did

1. Dattopant Thengadi personally deputed him to help the Express.
When the Express team was unsure how to counter Samant, Ramnath Goenka suggested that Shourie meet RSS/BMS trade-union leader Dattopant Thengadi. After hearing Shourie, Thengadi said he would assign two people in Bombay to guide them: Dr P. R. Kinnare and Vasantbhai Puriya.

This makes Kinare's involvement an organised intervention through Thengadi's trade-union network, rather than an incidental personal intervention.

2. Kinare became the Express team's link to the workers.
Shourie says that he, S. Gurumurthy and Bombay resident editor Hiranmay Karlekar began regularly meeting Kinare and Puriya. Every two or three days they went to Puriya's modest residence.

Kinare's specific job was crucial: according to Shourie, he kept them informed about what was happening among Express workers, what workers were discussing and how their mood was changing.

3. He advised patience instead of confronting Samant head-on.
Shourie recalls that the Express team repeatedly pressed Kinare and Puriya to act faster. Both advised patience—consistent with Thengadi's strategy that Samant was like a storm that should be allowed to exhaust itself rather than confronted directly.

At one stage Shourie and his colleagues even began wondering whether Kinare and the BMS actually possessed the organisational strength attributed to them.

That patience turned out to be part of the strategy.

4. Kinare detected workers' growing disillusionment with Samant.
This is one of the most important details.

In 1981 the militant trade unionist Datta Samant aligned with AR Antulay grabbed the Indian Express union Mumbai and launched an assault it was not the takeover of a trade union The idea was to take over the paper. The man was known for territorising and murdering company owners into submission

Goenka told Arun Shourie and me that if Samant succeeds he will decide what will go into the newspaper. He decided to close down the paper and issued a closure notice. Antulay refused allow closure
Indian Express filed a writ saying that the right to run a newspaper is subject to reasonable restrictions but the right to silence is absolute
Goenka being Goenka the workers were caught between two powerful men -- Goenka and Samant

The man who stepped in on the advice of the trade union stalwart Dattopant Thengadi and help the Indian Express to wean the workers away from the murderous Samant was none other than Dr Kinare. He virtually saved when Arun Shourie was being targeted. He guided us how to approach the workers. Many RSS workers helped to approach the workers.

The battle lasted for 123 days. Finally the Indian Express handed the first defeat to Datta Samant who was the most feared and uncrowned King of Mumbai trade union

The man who centred that battle of the Express was Dr Kinare

A sincere and simple RSS worker. Like many he gave the best years of his life for RSS and the cause it represented. Neither demanded nor got anything in return from the Indiam Express or the organisation

A great soul. A great friend. A great man

He was an unknown but tall man

I have been pursuing this Political and Business Bucanneer for the past 15 years over a case of open and shut fraud

As telecom minister Maran, the bucanneer, installing a 1000 line secret Telephone exchange case in his home in the name of the Regional Manager of BSNL unknown to the system was a famous expose by me in the New Indian Express in 2010

He was using it for uplinking Sun TV progs and benefitting hundreds of crores. The secret phones were also national security breach as they could make any call to anyone without being monitored. At that time the DMK was in love relation with the biggest national security risk the LTTE

But the buccaneer with his money political power and media power delayed a case which could he completed in months by a decade

This is the 7th time the buccaneer telecom minister went to the supreme court to quash and/or delay the CBI probe into the fraud exposed in 2010

The case was investigated in 2007 by an honest inspector of CBI who used to go by scooter from Beasant Nagar to Shastry Bhavan in Chennai. He risked his life and asked for permission to file FIR.

But the UPA govt of which the DMK was a constituent prevented the CBI from registering FIR

I had to file a writ in Supreme court in 2014 to direct the CBI to file FIR

The buccaneer went to the High coourt and then to Supreme Court and almost got the case quashed with the then Attorney General almost colluding with them

The AG who had given opinion to govt that the secret phones were in breach of national security conceded in the court contrary to it

I had to write a scathing article to expose the Attorney

During the hearing then CJI even said it is after all 1.72 cr cable laying expenses and that can be paid by Marans and the case closed.

Then I wrote an article saying that it is not a case of cable laying expenses but secret telephone exchange of over 1000 lines installed at the ministers home and used for uplinking Sun TV progs (for which a secret cable laid at a cost of 1..72 cr) the benefit in which would be hundreds of crores

I also reminder the Supreme court that just months before the court had confirmed sentence on a clerk for accepting a bribe of Rs 265 declaring that corruption should not be tolerated

I wrote that if a clerk has to go jail for a bibe of rs 265 the higher the stature of the corrupt greater should be the punishment

That attempt to quash the case failed and the charges were framed.

Then a pliable trial court first discharged them.

I scathingly attacked the trial court order as perverse

The Madras High court set aside the perverse order and the buccaneer minister went to the supreme court.

The supreme court asked them to face the trial

They delayed the trial by several years and now the trial is over and all witnesses had been examined.

Then the buccaneer began another round of litigation to delay the trial by getting Madras HC to order that the present telecom secy be summoned as court witness .. an absolutely untenable order

The CBI came in appeal to the SC against that order and shockingly the AG who appeared for the CBI earlier appeared for the buccaneer!

Then in a detailed article the OpIndia recounted the whole case from the start and the role of the then AG and now Maran counsel

After the OpIndia article the then AG didn't appear in the case

The SC finally told Maran that the telecom secy may be called not as court witness but as defence witness.

What is the difference

If he is a defence witness his statements will be admissible against the accused

Not if he is a court witness

They will now.probably not call the telecom secy as defence witness

Hopefully the trial will conclude soon and justice will be done

....20 years after the fraud was discovered by CBI but blocked by UPA

....16 years after it was exposed by me in the New Indian Express

While it’s important to support our students and ask for educational reforms that positively impact the future of our youth, it’s also very important that peaceful protests by students are Not hijacked by anti national elements to create chaos & change the nature of the protest.

Seeing so much hate & divide online makes me wonder if bad elements in & outside our country have already started to work overtime to weaponise the anger & frustration felt by our students.

What began as a reunion turned into a journey through time. We walked the same corridors that once echoed with our laughter, sat in the same classrooms where dreams first took shape, and enjoyed the same breakfast in the same mess that had once been part of our daily routine.
The highlight, without doubt, was meeting our teachers again. Seeing the familiar faces of the faculty who guided, inspired, and believed in us reminded us how profoundly they shaped our lives. It was heartwarming to find that while the years had passed, their warmth and affection had not changed.
Watching our children experience the place that helped define our values, friendships, and character made the visit even more meaningful. It was a beautiful reminder that while buildings may age, the memories, lessons, and bonds they create remain timeless.
Thank you to our beloved school and the wonderful teachers who continue to keep its spirit alive. We left with grateful hearts, cherished memories, and the comforting realization that some places never stop feeling like home.

There are some diehard Trump fans in this country who thought India could still kiss and make up with America even after all that it did to us. We had invested 1 bn $ for a 100 Tejas GE -404 engines. After 4 years we got just 2.instead of cancelling the order all together we placed orders for 200 more such engines! Now we got the ultimate shock when USA killed the Plans for AMCA. Like ninnies we had designed this aircraft around the hopes of getting the GE414 engines. To KILL this program US just raised the price of this engine from Rs 70 crores each to Rs 200 Crores each. Its clear as daylight US does not want India to have its own Vth Gen Stealth fighters. It will Throw a fit if we buy and produce the SU-57 Russian stealth fighter in India or buy Russian or Iranian oil. It is time to tell the US to go to blazes. A number of countries in the world are coming to this sober conclusion ( including Europe, Canada and Japan). Its time for India to show some SPINE

JNU में ABVP को तब से देख रही हूँ जब JNUSU में ABVP को 400 वोट आते थे और तब वामपंथ बड़े दंभ के साथ अकेले-अकेले चुनाव लड़ता था। AISA का एक वामपंथी भरे मंच से कहता नहीं थकता था कि AISA यदि JNUSU में एक कुत्ते को भी चुनाव लड़ाएगी तो जीत जाएगी। आज आए JNUSU परिणाम में ABVP ने अकेले 1900 मतों का आंकड़ा पार किया है जबकि JNU में अपने अस्तित्व बचाने के लिए जदोजहद्द करते वामपंथी संगठन AISA+SFI+DSF महागठबन्धन बनाने को मजबूर हैं। उसके बाद भी GS पर मात्र 100 मतों का अन्तर रहा। सह सचिव में मात्र 229 के करीब तो अध्यक्ष में मात्र सवा चार सौ। एक समय वामपंथ के लिए अभेध्य माने जाने वाला यह किला अब भरभराकर गिरने के लिए तैयार है। सम्भव है कि अग्रिम एक दो वर्षों में हमें यह देखने को मिल जाए।
बहरहाल हम चुनाव हार गए पर एक संगठन के तौर पर हम जीते हैं, एक विचार के तौर पर हम जीते हैं। ये लड़ाई विचारों की है। 400 -1900 का मार्ग तय किया है। वामी गठबंधन में डर है और यह सुनिश्चित है कि अब JNU में वामपंथी कभी अकेले चुनाव नहीं लड़ पाएंगे। न तब ABVP वामियों के समक्ष झुकी थी न कभी झुकेगी।
