I am a Meitei, and with all the narratives circulating today, I feel it is time to share my own lived experiences with the hills of Manipur — not to generalize, but to speak honestly about what I have personally gone through.

My father often travelled to Kohima for work, and once he returned with nothing — he had been looted in the hills by what were then commonly known as Naga hostiles. They took everything from him. Later, when he was posted in Ukhrul — a beautiful hill station on the surface — every day felt like a survival test. He faced constant pressure, demands, harassment, and the unspoken threat that followed him everywhere simply because he was a Meitei working in the hills. Life became so unpredictable that he eventually had to lobby for a transfer back to Imphal. That was the reality he lived through.

Even during my college days, whenever I travelled by bus to Guwahati, I would only breathe a sigh of relief after reaching Assam. The journey through the hills meant halting not just at Army checkpoints but also at insurgent-run pickets where “tax” was collected openly (essentially highway extortion). At any moment, anyone could enter the bus and travel without paying. That constant uncertainty shapes you in ways you don’t forget.

The murder of Dr. Kishan — my good friend — and two others did not shock me. He was someone who genuinely wanted to bring positive change to the hills. But when certain demands were not met, he and his colleagues were brutally killed. Their deaths were not just tragic; they were a chilling reminder of the risks that Meiteis faced when trying to serve in those areas.

My cousin sister, a government school teacher, was once posted in the hills. She was terrified to go — and the reason was obvious: safety. That fear was so widespread that everyone inside the system knew about the “ghost teacher” arrangement. A Meitei teacher officially posted in the hills often couldn’t go because of fear and pressure, so a local person would take her place and work on her behalf. The salary would then be informally shared between them. It was an open secret — a makeshift survival mechanism disguised as administration.

Even seemingly small, everyday incidents revealed the deeper imbalance. When our house in Imphal was being constructed, a Tangkhul contractor came and sold off the good-quality roofing tins that had been allotted for the project in the hills. He did it casually, almost as if diverting materials meant for the hills into the valley was routine. And that was the saddest part — this kind of quiet exploitation had become normalised, something everyone knew but no one questioned.

What is even harder to accept today is how responsibility is shifted. Some of the very people who had access to hill development funds, who held power and positions, lived comfortably in the valley while the hill areas remained neglected. Yet the narrative that gets circulated now is that the hills were left undeveloped because Meiteis “oppressed” or “ignored” them. The uncomfortable truth is that a significant portion of the resources meant for the hills never reached the people they were intended for. But instead of acknowledging internal mismanagement and corruption, the blame is conveniently placed on the Meiteis.

What pains me today is not just the rewriting of history, but the erasing of lived realities like mine. When people say Meiteis have exploited the tribals, I wonder which Meiteis they are talking about. Because the Meiteis I know — my father, my cousin sister, my friends, myself — entered the hills with fear, not power.

For decades, we moved through those roads with caution. We paid “taxes” not because we were rich, but because refusing could mean violence. We lived in uncertainty, not privilege.

So when today’s narratives paint us as the aggressors, as if we walked the hills with authority, it feels like a complete reversal of truth. Those who shout the loudest today were silent when Meiteis were vulnerable. Our discomfort, our fear, our losses — they never made it into the conversation.

That is why I speak now. Not to counter anyone, not to blame, but to remind people that the story of Manipur is not one-sided. There are truths on all sides. And my truth — the truth I lived — cannot simply be erased because it is inconvenient to present-day political narratives.

People may debate, deny, or twist stories, but lived experiences cannot be overwritten.

TIM exposed The Aggressors of Manipur Violence

The @PUCLindia report paints Meiteis as the aggressors in the Manipur Violence. But @ThadouInpi_MN (TIM) memorandum to @mygovindia, @mygovassam & @manipurmygov shatters that narrative exposing how the real drivers of violence are SoO-backed Kuki militants.

TIM revealed that KNO cadres led by Deputy C-in-C Thenthang Haokip, armed with assault rifles, openly participated in the Torbung-Bangla massacre of Meitei civilians. These SoO militants enjoy State-sanctioned impunity through the Joint Monitoring Group, using the pact as a license for violence.

The brutal torture & killing of Nehkam Jomhao, Chairman of the Thadou Literature Society in Assam, on August 30 by KRA & UKDA cadres, is another glaring proof. He was killed for defending Thadou identity and holding peace talks with the Meitei groups recently in August, 2025 in Imphal.

TIM alleged that the SoO has been a complete failure, empowering militants to:

- Spread jihadist-influenced Kuki supremacist ideology

- Intimidate through boycotts & illegal edicts backed by Kuki CSOs & Churches

- Rig democracy via booth capturing, bloc voting & voter intimidation

- Run cross-border terrorism, arms smuggling & youth recruitment

- Expand poppy cultivation & drug trafficking, turning Manipur into a hub of the illegal trade on par with the "Golden Triangle."

TIM alleged the "radical Kuki supremacist network consists of Kuki SoO groups, particularly the
KNO, Kuki CSOs like @KukiInpimanipur, KSO @KSODelhi
, and Kuki Churches like the Kuki Christian Council (KCC)
and Kuki Worship Service (KWS), being the key drivers of hate campaigns, and violent Kuki supremacist agendas and policies.

TIM named key figures driving this supremacist network: Dr T Lunkim, supremo of Kuki Christian Church (KCC), Dr TL Angam Haokip, Pastor Onkho Haokip, Pastor Demlal Haokip, PS Haokip (KNO President), Saikot MLA @paolienlal , among others.
They are the architects of hate and violence.

The PUCL narrative crumbles when faced with TIM’s ( a Thadou Orgn which fight for distinct Thadou indentity and not want to be under the supremacist fold of Kuki) evidence:

Why does PUCL ignore that the very pact (SoO) has given militants the shield to unleash atrocities with impunity?

The truth: PUCL’s report demonizes Meiteis while whitewashing armed Kuki militancy. TIM exposes the real aggressors now.

🔸 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐩𝐢 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 has one of the highest numbers of unrecognized villages, with 𝟑𝟎𝟒 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝟗𝟔𝟒 unrecognized villages in Manipur. The district is seeing a mushrooming of new villages and 𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡.

🔸 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 from the Kuki-Zo community act as 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟𝐬 for as many as 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬.

🔸There is significant 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in the area and other areas of the district. The involvement of 𝐊𝐮𝐤𝐢 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 in this cannot be ruled out.

We urge the relevant government departments and ministries to investigate this matter thoroughly. A 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬, along with the 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 (with appropriate alternatives), might be necessary.
