Here’s Jim Reed, the BBC’s health reporter speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live:
“Almost every expert out there thinks <Long COVID> is a very important factor in explaining why we’ve seen this rise over the past 4-5 years in people who are off work long-term sick”.
@dianne49@_CatintheHat THIS. The @NHSuk only seems capable of chucking a pill at pts to treat symptoms.
Abysmal at prevention and no understanding of root cause
Long COVID trials are struggling—not because of lack of effort or goodwill (mostly), but because of errors in trial design and poor endpoints. Our new paper, out today, lays out how to start fixing this. Now.
A short 🧵.
One of the reasons why I go so hard on science misinformation/disinformation, is that as a working scientist it is frustrating to see your research misreported to push an agenda.
For example, consider this piece of right-wing propaganda from The Telegraph that was just published
The Covid Inquiry finds that if Boris Johnson had called the first lockdown even one week earlier then it could have saved at least 20,000 lives.
Here's a quick reminder of what Johnson was actually doing during those weeks
All the usual suspects clearly haven’t read the @covidinquiryuk briefing & taking comments out of context to allege that lockdowns weren’t needed.
If we’d only had stringent restrictions those same usual suspects wld b claiming those weren’t needed. Doesn’t fit their narrative

“If you wait until you can see the water flooding back in, it’s probably too late.”
This is spot on. 🎯
@_CatintheHat@RosieDuffield1 Like @vernonkay on @BBCRadio2 yesterday complaining of flu-like symptoms & bad stomach after his holiday. Let’s hope there’s no clinically vulnerable people on his train or in workplace.
Hey @vernonkay
You know the flu-like bug with icky tum you said you had on @BBCRadio2 this morning
You need to take a test for this and consider protecting vulnerable people from your virus.

Presenting #LongCovid as a disease "without biomarkers" is a way to minimize the disease entity. Making it a "mystery", some "fatigue", "unexplained symptoms". Yet, everyone who reads the scientific literature knows that a rich palette of biomarkers are associated with LC
