RETURN TO FUEL SUBSIDY WILL REVERSE NIGERIA’S ECONOMIC GAINS — INFORMATION MINISTER

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has cautioned against calls to restore the petrol subsidy, saying a return to the old regime would undermine Nigeria’s improving fiscal position, weaken investor confidence, and reverse gains from the economic reforms of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration.

In an Op-Ed published on Monday, August 24, 2026, in some national dailies, titled “Restoring Fuel Subsidy Will Reverse Nigeria’s Economic Gains,” the Minister outlined the fiscal benefits of subsidy removal, the economic risks averted, and the difficult trade-offs that would confront the country should petrol subsidy be reintroduced.

"Restoring subsidy would almost instantly return Nigeria to the economic conditions of 2022, recreating the same fiscal pressures, distortions, scarcity and incentives for arbitrage that made the old system unsustainable," Idris said.

Idris said proponents of subsidy restoration must confront its real opportunity costs.

“Do we restore petrol subsidy, or sustain student loans and consumer credit for young Nigerians? Do we restore subsidy, or preserve higher allocations to states and local governments? Do we restore subsidy, or continue funding roads, rail, power and security? Do we restore subsidy, or strengthen the fiscal capacity required to expand healthcare, education and social protection for vulnerable Nigerians?” he asked.

The Minister recalled that in 2022, amid declining oil production and weak revenues, Nigeria spent about $10 billion on fuel subsidies, while the World Bank warned that the subsidy was consuming resources that could otherwise have supported education, healthcare, infrastructure and social protection.

Citing the Federal Government’s recently presented “Nigeria’s Reform Scorecard: The Benefits, Costs and Harms Prevented,” Idris said the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed that subsidy savings mobilised ₦15.8 trillion in resources for the Federation between June 2023 and December 2025.

He explained that approximately ₦5.43 trillion accrued to the Federal Government, ₦6.52 trillion to states and ₦3.88 trillion to local governments, clarifying that the ₦15.8 trillion was not a separate pool of cash but resources released within the Federation’s wider fiscal system.

According to Idris, the increased fiscal space has strengthened the capacity of states and local governments to meet salary and pension obligations and invest in essential services, while supporting major federal investments in infrastructure, security, agriculture and human capital.

He said the Reform Scorecard recorded approximately ₦6.47 trillion in additional expenditure on strategic infrastructure, alongside more than ₦400 billion committed to major social investment initiatives, including NELFUND, MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund, MREIF and CREDICORP. In contrast, social transfers have reached more than 10 million Nigerian households.

Idris added that Nigeria was already carrying an electricity subsidy estimated at ₦3.14 trillion between June 2023 and December 2025, warning that reintroducing petrol subsidy would impose an additional burden on public finances.

He noted that the Organised Private Sector and the wider economic community had also cautioned against reversing the reform.

“Nigeria cannot build tomorrow’s economy by returning to yesterday’s unsustainable subsidy regime. We have moved beyond that model,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to view the reforms in the context of the country's long-term economic stability and the need to build a stronger and more productive economy.

PRESIDENT TINUBU RENEWS THE TENURE OF DG NTA, MD NAN

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed the tenure of the Director-General of the NTA Network News and the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria for another three-year term.

President Tinubu first appointed Abdulhamid Salihu Dembos of the NTA and Ali Mohammed Ali of the NAN on October 20, 2023. Their second term will begin on October 20, 2026.

Salihu Dembos, from Yola, Adamawa State, is a former National President of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Art Workers Union (RATTAWU). He previously served as the executive director of marketing at the NTA after his retirement in 2017.

He joined the NTA as an announcer at the Kaduna Station after his National Youth Service in 1989. He rose through the ranks and, at various times, served as General Manager at NTA Lokoja and NTA Kano. He retired as the acting Zonal Director, NTA Kaduna Network Centre, in 2017.

Ali Mohammed Ali is a veteran journalist and media manager with over 30 years of experience. He has a keen interest in media evolution and content development in a digital world, meeting the needs of a diverse population with alternative news feeds.

With a first degree in English from Bayero University, Kano, Ali also holds a graduate degree in International Affairs from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communications from Bayero University, Kano.

President Tinubu has urged the two chief executives to justify his confidence in them by continuing to demonstrate commitment to their organisation’s mandates and the promotion of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

FG: FUEL SUBSIDY REFORM HAS CREATED FISCAL SPACE, AVERTED DEEPER ECONOMIC CRISIS — INFORMATION MINISTER

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said the economic reforms undertaken by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal position, improving economic stability and creating the resources required to invest in infrastructure, security, human capital and social protection.

The Minister stated this on Wednesday in Abuja at a press conference convened to present the Federal Government’s “Nigeria’s Reform Scorecard: The Benefits, Costs and Harms Prevented,” providing Nigerians with detailed information on the resources generated through the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, as well as the broader impact of the reforms on the economy.

Idris said the decision to remove the fuel subsidy was one of the most significant and difficult economic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu Administration, acknowledging that it had imposed real costs and adjustments on households, businesses and communities.

He, however, stressed that the reforms were necessary to redirect resources previously committed to an unsustainable subsidy regime towards investments capable of delivering greater and more sustainable value to Nigerians.

“Citizens have a right to know what resources have been freed up, what these resources mean for the Federation, and how the benefits of reform are being translated into tangible improvements in their lives,” the Minister said.

He described the press conference as an important demonstration of the Administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing that government’s responsibility goes beyond announcing policies to explaining their implications, accounting for their outcomes and demonstrating how difficult decisions are laying the foundations for a stronger and more sustainable economy.

Idris commended the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Taiwo Oyedele, and the economic management team for presenting the reform scorecard and providing Nigerians with the facts, figures and methodology underpinning the assessment.

Presenting the scorecard, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Taiwo Oyedele, said the purpose of the exercise was not to declare victory but to provide an honest account of the costs, benefits and harms prevented by the reforms.

He disclosed that between June 2023 and December 2025, subsidy savings mobilised ₦15.8 trillion for the Federation, with ₦5.4 trillion accruing to the Federal Government and ₦10.4 trillion shared among states and local governments.

He added that the Federal Government generated ₦3.1 trillion in incremental independent revenue and ₦11.9 trillion in incremental borrowing, bringing total incremental Federal Government resources to ₦20.4 trillion, while incremental expenditure stood at ₦30.64 trillion.

“We are not here to pretend these reforms were painless. We are here to show you, honestly and with the numbers, what they cost, the benefits they delivered, and the harm they prevented,” Oyedele said.

The Finance Minister said the reforms had contributed to improvements in key macroeconomic indicators, including headline inflation, foreign reserves, market capitalisation and real GDP growth.

He noted that headline inflation had eased to 15.91 per cent as of June 2026, gross foreign reserves stood at $52.5 billion, while real GDP growth had strengthened to 3.89 per cent.

Themed “Security Challenges and Integrity of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections”, the event was chaired by the former Governor of Zamfara State and Senator representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar.

In my remarks, I reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the security and information environment necessary for peaceful, credible and transparent elections in 2027.

The security and welfare of Nigerians remain fundamental responsibilities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, and we will continue to mobilise the resources, personnel and technology required to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other threats to the safety of Nigerians.

We are also working very hard to tackle growing threat posed by misinformation and disinformation, particularly with the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence. Democracy cannot thrive where citizens are deliberately misled.

This is why the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Nigeria, in partnership with UNESCO and other stakeholders, has established the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI) in Abuja to strengthen media and information literacy in Nigeria and Africa.

FG REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SECURE, CREDIBLE 2027 ELECTIONS — INFORMATION MINISTER

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the security and information environment necessary for peaceful, credible and transparent elections in 2027.

The Minister stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at the 8th Public Lecture, Impact Series and Awards of Excellence organised by Blueprint Newspapers Limited, with the theme: “Security Challenges and Integrity of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections.”

Idris commended Blueprint Newspapers for sustaining the annual platform, describing it as an important avenue for policymakers, professionals, academics, the media and other stakeholders to engage on issues of national importance.

He said the theme was timely, noting that the integrity of elections was shaped not only on election day but also by the security environment, the credibility of institutions, the conduct of political actors, the professionalism of the media and the quality of information available to citizens.

“For the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the security and welfare of Nigerians remain fundamental responsibilities of government,” the Minister said, adding that the Federal Government would continue to mobilise the resources, personnel and technology required to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other threats to the safety of Nigerians.

The Minister also highlighted the growing threat posed by misinformation and disinformation, particularly with the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence, which has made it increasingly possible to create convincing but fabricated audio, video and images.
“Democracy cannot thrive where citizens are deliberately misled,” Idris said, noting that the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, in partnership with UNESCO and other stakeholders, had established the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI) in Abuja to strengthen media and information literacy.

The Managing Director/CEO of Blueprint Newspapers Limited, Salisu Umar, said the annual lecture, which began in 2018, was established to provide a platform for discussing issues of national interest beyond the traditional newspaper space, while also recognising Nigerians who had demonstrated exemplary leadership and impact.

The Chairman of the Occasion, former Governor of Zamfara State and Senator representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar, said insecurity should not be treated as the responsibility of security agencies alone, stressing that political leaders, communities, citizens and other stakeholders must play their part.
Drawing from his experience in government, Senator Yari said the challenge of insecurity had persisted across successive administrations and electoral cycles and warned against politicising the issue.
“The issue of insecurity is not something to be traded with for the purpose of winning the hearts of the citizens,” he said, urging Nigerians to collectively confront the challenge and work towards making the country safer for present and future generations.

The Royal Father of the Day, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar, CFR, Etsu Nupe, who was represented by His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Oga Onawo, the Andoma of Doma, commended Blueprint Newspapers for its contribution to national discourse and called on Nigerians to remain committed to the unity and development of the country.

In his message, the Etsu Nupe stressed that Nigeria’s challenges should not diminish the nation’s enormous human and intellectual potential, declaring that “there is no alternative to indivisible Nigeria” and urging Nigerians to take responsibility for building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has congratulated former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose life and service occupy an important place in Nigeria’s contemporary history.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Minister said General Babangida’s journey through military service, national leadership and statesmanship represents a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political and institutional evolution.

Idris noted that, decades after leaving office, the former Military President has remained engaged with issues of national importance, particularly those concerning Nigeria’s unity, stability and development.

He said General Babangida’s experiences in leadership and public service constitute a valuable reservoir from which succeeding generations can draw lessons about the complexities and responsibilities of nation-building.

The Minister also acknowledged the former Military President’s enduring faith in Nigeria and his continued interventions in support of national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

“General Babangida remains an important voice in our national journey, and at 85, we celebrate his service, his statesmanship and his enduring commitment to a united Nigeria,” Idris said.

He wished the former Military President many more years of good health, peace and fulfilment, while praying that he continues to enjoy the affection of his family and the goodwill of Nigerians.

Information Minister in Calabar with former governor: Dignitaries Honour Late Placidus Ugah Ogar as Ayade Family Receives Outpouring of Solidarity

The burial ceremony of Late Placidus Ugah Ogar in Cross River State has brought together an impressive gathering of political leaders, government officials, traditional rulers, family members, friends and well-wishers, in a strong display of solidarity with the family of former Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade.

Among the dignitaries at the burial was the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Hon. Mohammed Idris, whose presence underscored his personal relationship with the former governor and his commitment to maintaining meaningful connections with leaders and stakeholders beyond official engagements.

The Minister’s visit to Cross River for the burial also reflected the importance of human relationships in public service. His presence demonstrated that leadership extends beyond government offices and political responsibilities to moments of grief, compassion and solidarity with people and families.

The massive turnout at the burial was a testament to the wide network of relationships built by Professor Ben Ayade during and after his tenure as Governor of Cross River State. Political associates, traditional leaders, government officials, community leaders and friends gathered to honour his late brother, creating an atmosphere marked by camaraderie, shared memories and genuine affection.

Cross River Live correspondent in Obudu reported that the, gathering also offered a glimpse into the enduring relationships Ayade established during his years in public service. His administration brought him into contact with leaders and influential figures across Nigeria, and the presence of several dignitaries at the burial demonstrated that those relationships have continued beyond his tenure in office.

INFORMATION MINISTER MOURNS GARKUWAN KONTAGORA, IBRAHIM WALI

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has expressed profound sadness over the death of prominent Niger State political figure, community leader and philanthropist, Alhaji Ibrahim Wali, the Garkuwan Kontagora.

The Minister described the late Wali as a close associate, trusted friend and distinguished son of Niger State whose life was marked by generosity, loyalty and an abiding commitment to the progress of his people.

“I have received with profound sadness the news of the passing of my dear friend and brother, Alhaji Ibrahim Wali, the Garkuwan Kontagora. His death is a deeply personal loss to me and a painful one for the people of Kontagora Emirate and Niger State,” the Minister said.

Idris said the late Garkuwan Kontagora distinguished himself through years of service to his community, using his influence and resources to support people and advance causes that improved lives.

“Alhaji Ibrahim Wali was a man of the people in the truest sense. He understood that privilege and influence carried a responsibility to uplift others. He touched many lives through his philanthropy, support for education, empowerment of the less privileged and commitment to the development of his community.

“As Garkuwan Kontagora, he carried his traditional responsibility with dignity and devotion. He remained deeply connected to the aspirations of the people and was a respected voice on matters affecting Kontagora Emirate and Niger State.

“I will personally miss his friendship, his counsel, his warmth and his remarkable ability to build bridges across different segments of society. We have lost a dependable friend and a patriot who genuinely desired the progress of his people,” said Idris.

The Minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the Sarkin Sudan of Kontagora and the entire Kontagora Emirate, as well as the government and people of Niger State.

He prayed Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the late Garkuwan Kontagora, reward his good deeds with Aljannatul Firdaus, and grant his family and all those affected by the loss the fortitude to bear his passing.

NIGERIA’S DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH, UNITY MUST REMAIN OUR GREATEST ASSET – INFORMATION MINISTER

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described Nigeria’s diversity as a source of strength, urging citizens to promote unity and mutual understanding, noting that what binds Nigerians together is far greater than what divides them.

Idris stated this on Friday, August 14, 2026, when he attended the wake-keep of the late Ukandi Placidus Ugar Ogar in Obudu, Cross River State, alongside family members, friends, and dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey; former Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prof. Ben Ayade; Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State, Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar; and the Cross River State Commissioner for Lands, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang.

The late Ukandi Placidus Ugar Ogar, who died at the age of 76, was an elder brother to Senator Ayade and Dr. Frank Ayade.

The Minister said the gathering reflected the richness of Nigeria’s diversity and the ability of citizens from different backgrounds to unite in solidarity.

“What I have seen today is the diversity of Nigeria and how it can be further harnessed to promote unity in this country. Nigerians from all walks of life are Nigerians first. Therefore, we must celebrate them wherever they are,” he said.

While expressing condolences to the bereaved family, Idris noted that the occasion also provided an opportunity to honour a life that fostered unity among people.

“It is a moment of sorrow that he has passed on, but also a moment of gratitude that he lived a worthy life, one that helped bring people together,” the Minister said.

He called on Nigerians to continue to promote unity and shared values, while leveraging the country’s diverse cultures and traditions as assets for national development.

“We must strengthen our unity, uphold our shared values, and also see our diversity as a resource that can contribute meaningfully to the growth of our economy,” he said.

Idris reaffirmed that Nigeria’s strength lies in its people and their collective ability to rise above differences in pursuit of the common good.

Nigeria’s refineries will soon bounce back — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves commendation for the reforms transforming Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Oil production is rising, revenues to the Federation Account are improving, and Nigeria is once again meeting its OPEC production quota. In June alone, crude output reached a 74-month high.

Thank you, Mr President. The reforms are working, and Nigeria is moving in the right direction.
