British Labour MP Diane Abbott, the first Black woman elected to the UK Parliament and its longest-serving female MP, has urged the British Government to assist Jamaica following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.
Abbott, who is of Jamaican heritage and a former Jamaica Observer columnist, raised the matter in Parliament, stressing the storm’s impact on families both in Jamaica and the UK.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper responded, confirming that humanitarian aid and consular teams are on standby and that Britain “stands ready to help and respond.”
