Many Muslims today hold that the Jews falsified the text of the #Torah. It is a real barrier between Islam and Judaism — and a brick in the wall of the Middle East conflict. My new essay argues this belief contradicts the #Quran itself.
The term is #tahrif. The earliest Islamic reading — al-Tabari, and Ibn Abbas as transmitted by al-Bukhari — is distortion of meaning/interpretation, not corruption of the written text. The "the text was forged" doctrine was systematized only later, by Ibn Hazm (11th c.).
The Quran treats the Torah as present and authoritative: it has Jesus come "confirming the Torah," and it tells the People of the Book to "bring the Torah and read it." You cannot confirm — or adjudicate by — a text you regard as a forgery.
And we now know what that text was. The Dead Sea Scrolls (3rd c. BCE–1st c. CE) preserve the Hebrew scriptures of Jesus's contemporaries — substantially the text Jews read today.
The conclusion is irenic, not polemical: returning to Muslims the scriptures the Quran itself affirms removes a theological cause of conflict.
