Images from @NASA capture how months of excessive heat and drought have parched the Mississippi River between 2021 and 2023.🔥

This year, for the second consecutive year, prolonged drought reduced its flow to less than half of normal levels. 📉 Water levels dropped so low in part due to the hot, dry summer in the region. The low water levels caused barges and ships to run aground during one of the busiest times of the year to ship grain, and created saltwater intrusion concerns in southern Louisiana, disrupting the supply of food and water. 🚢

We are now on the precipice of the greatest crisis of our times - soil extinction. 🌱🌍

Why is it imperative we #SaveSoil now? Every year 27,000 species of soil microorganisms that depend on soil organic matter for their survival go extinct. 🦠 And 50-70% of the carbon stored in agricultural soil has already been lost. ⚠️ If we don’t reverse this and ensure at least 3-6% of soil organic matter (based on regional conditions), there is a real threat of losing many key microorganisms on which soil health, and in turn our health, depends for survival. 🚨💚
