Another pic of Michael D, from 1959 with his pals. He is 2nd right, but the guy 2nd left also has a claim to fame. Sean Shanagher subsequently joined the Irish army. Two years later he was in the Congo & fought the SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE, wherein 156 men held off onslaught by 3000.
As his Presidency draws to a close, here's Michael D. Higgins 75 years ago (1950) when he was a pupil at Ballycar NS, a 2 teacher country school outside Newmarket on Fergus. He's the boy in the middle.
Mostly forgotten now but Kilkee once had its very own Monster, a cousin perhaps of the one in Loch Ness... The last confirmed sighting was in October 1871 and it prompted this graphic newspaper illustration. Write up attached
@irishacw@GettysburgNMP@gburgfoundation Hi Damian. You’re doing great work. Tangentially related but I just came across this letter from New Quay, Co. Clare in 1863 in the Kerby Miller collection, which may be of interest.
On the shaft of the high cross at Dysert O’Dea in #Clare is a large-scale carving of a bishop in high relief wearing a long robe & conical mitre – a type of hat worn by bishops, reflecting a Continental tradition adopted in Ireland mainly during the 11th & 12th centuries. 🧵

Introducing... a new T Shirt featuring Newmarket in 1703! Showing the oldest map of the village, when it was quite tiny but nonetheless had some industry in the form of two Mills. T Shirt will be launched this Sunday at the Newmarket On Fergus Show where I will have a stall.
The O’Briens of Dromoland in 1880. Ellen (née White) & Edward Donough, with children Donough, Moira, Clare, Eileen & (perched top right) Maud. They were aged 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 (O’Brien had already four children from his 1st marriage and this 2nd union was blessed with ten…😀)
There is nowhere on this planet can compare with Co. Clare for the incredible range of our historical sites … & with the number of them which have cows running freely amidst the ancient stonework..
To wit, I have designed a T Shirt. Check it & 4 more on a Clare History theme at
The castle of Ballymarkham is like a giant Doll’s House, with rooms, doorways visible inside. This is because of visitors here in 1651… With great efficiency, Cromwell’s army demolished just one corner of it, containing the spiral staircase, thereby making it uninhabitable💀
Domestic servants at Dromoland in 1873. Butler, footman, house boy & a hierarchy of maids, mostly born in England. It was a requirement they be ‘clean in their person’ & Protestant. Workers on the estate farm however, & the lowest class of servant- skivvies, were Catholic. 😀
While looking for something else, I just came across my old Nuclear ‘Accident’ tablets. Issued to our whole population in 2002, they went out of date just three years later. Thank God we no longer have any need, as the world we live in is a much safer place 😀
