Medical interns, handcuffed and under police escort, are being led into Buganda Road Court for a bail hearing this morning.

The eight were remanded to Luzira Prison last Friday following their arrest amid the ongoing standoff over internship deployment and welfare.

You arrested, charged, and locked intern doctors in Luzira Prison for demanding the facilitation they need to offer quality healthcare.

What a myopic response to the very people who keep this country’s hospitals running!

What an embarrassment! 😳

Is this how you motivate scientists? By throwing them into prison for standing up for food, accommodation, and the basic support required to deliver quality care? How did you decide that unpaid, unsupported interns should report for duty? Who advised you that silencing them with court charges and remand would solve anything?

What an embarrassment! 😳

This choice is a grave mistake that courts national disaster. It will drive doctors out of Uganda, empty our wards, and leave ordinary citizens to suffer and die for lack of care. You reward honest demand with prison and then wonder why young professionals flee abroad while taxpayers later fund foreign services.

Why has the NRM government become so intolerant of peaceful dissent?

Why does the judiciary keep enabling this repression instead of defending citizens’ constitutional rights?

[Assoc of Graduate Nurses & Midwives of Uganda @agnmu_Ug]

Today, our association leaders joined @FUMI_org, @TheUMAofficial, and the families of our 8 arrested medical interns to serve as sureties for their bail applications.

To our dismay, the Buganda Road Magistrate remanded them until Monday next week to verify the documents we submitted.

We remain resolute, with strong resolve, to secure their unconditional release. This fight is for our patients, who continue to suffer because interns have not reported to duty over an unresolved welfare issue that the government has ignored.

We return to court Monday for the prosecution's response, and remain hopeful they will finally be released.

In sickness or in happiness, at some point, we all become patients. Isn’t that reason enough to make our healthcare facilities better, safer and more humane for everyone?
