@KampalaInterna1 has for long acted against fundamental rights and freedoms of students. Higher institutions of learning shouldn’t prevent students (with their full consent & determination) from bearing children.
It’s unfortunate to look at their students as ‘violators’
“HRDs play a key role in upholding fundamental freedoms and the constitutional order. But their work comes at a cost: intensifying online and physical threats, often from extremist groups emboldened by impunity”.in @OGR_EN https://t.co/dzvfdF2fIc
Nature is so beautiful, that it doesn’t lie.
Nature presupposes that we humans should be a shield & protective measure to that which can harm us.

We hope by this session, participants are encouraged to over the stress levels.

#Mentalhealth condition can be acquired by many factors such as torture, indoctrination, prolonged isolation in cells, bodies response to environment etc. 28 years is such a long time that one feels worthless give the prolonged period of detention. May Alfred get well soon..
Alfred Byamukama spent 28 years in jail, yet he was NOT convicted, never released!
See, under the Trial on Indictment Act - one of those laws from Uganda's past problematic eras - if it gets to the attention of court that a person facing trial may have a mental health illness, the court sends them to jail - not a mental health facility or home - and then waits for a letter from the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to decide the next steps. It's been decades since any Minister of Justice wrote that letter.
Back in 2020, Kaddu Herbert Solomon - himself a victim of this law - and I petitioned the High Court over this section of the law under HCT-00-CVMC-0381-2020 [https://t.co/hoWUBXdWq6], the matter has not been decided to this day! Meanwhile, tens of Ugandans who are supposed to be free or in mental health facilities are rotting in jail! I am so happy that Alfred regained his freedom. This being Uganda, he won't be compensated.
Perhaps the best thing about this story for me is seeing that @Canaanthelawyer is the lawyer who got Alfred out. See, Canaan knows A LOT about the injustice that is our criminal justice system. Not long ago the same system had decided that he didn't deserve to live and sentenced him to death. He spent years on death row, probably thinking it was his final days and wondering why a judge would decide that his life be ended so young; fortunately, that wasn't the end of the story, he come out of death row a brilliant lawyer, and he now uses his knowledge to free others!
The #stressawareness week ends with a lesson for us to know our bodies well, especially "Bodyimage"- knowing ourselves & feeling positive about ourselves.
Let's start the week on a note of appreciation of ourselves & our own images, boosting our self-esteem & confidence

Human rights defenders (HRDs), driven by passion and urgency, often prioritise justice for the oppressed and marginalised over their own wellbeing. While this commitment can be deeply rewarding, especially when their efforts lead to change or recognition of others’ suffering, the emotional and physical toll of constant self-sacrifice threatens both their sustainability and overall health.
In today’s wellbeing tip, @OtebaKMo, our Senior Protection Officer and Wellbeing Lead, encourages HRDs to take time for themselves: rest, exercise, and even do something as simple as staying hydrated. HRDs can’t pour from an empty cup.
