@NeuroRebel Quite literally feeling like my body is glitching and shutting down and ceasing functioning in every way possible. And for some reason it never makes any sense to the people you try to explain it to. Desperately isolating… like Jack in Titanic sinking.
Growing up, my Muslim family never celebrated Christmas. This year I am not going home, because pandemic, so my roommates are teaching me how to have my first proper Christmas.
I am approaching this with anthropological precision.
Here are a few observations.
Few things rob the fun from learning like fear does. When I’m afraid of failing or looking unintelligent, learning new things feels intimidating. When I move past that fear to focus on my potential for growth, learning new things feels exhilarating.
At SPSP this year, I heard great things about a symposium on rejection, impostor syndrome, & burnout featuring profs. that folks would think of as "successful". Now, we can all experience the symposium vicariously! https://t.co/Z5Xspc8DVu
Morning Alix - thrilled to be of use. Great luck with the FHEA. For me, differentiated education is a way to critique the deficit model of teaching and learning. I argue - with an information scaffold and careful use of multimodality - we can transform access into excellence. tx
Politicians of all parties. If you’re asked if you’re going to win the election, just say “I’ve no idea, I really hope so though.” You don’t have to talk tough ALL THE TIME. This isn’t the wrestling.
Your life is an experiment and it’s the most interesting experiment you’ll ever run. Just like in research, if you’re not willing to try something because it’s different or might fail, then you’ll never even know what you’re missing out on discovering.
Whilst I find the title of this piece misleading re how much control we have over our thoughts, I like Hayes’ approach of listen but don’t engage coz not every thought we have is true/useful. The control is not about what thoughts we have but our responses to them (with practice)
Five years (or more) of life is way too long to not:
- have a personal life,
- eat healthily,
- sleep properly,
- pursue any interests besides work,
- take care of your #mentalhealth
We don’t need to postpone our life.
Need to take self-care.

I want to say something about living with acute dyslexia because Twitter can be a pretty unforgiving place for people with unseen challenges.
Every day I get picked up on something I write. Mostly it’s kindly or humorous which is appreciated.
Sometimes it’s sneering or brutal
Watching this and reading this thread I have many feelings. As much as I disagree with Trump on many, many counts, I can’t watch this without seeing the hurt in his face... & that hurt is concerning. Feeling pressured, stressed, threatened & attacked...What will happen next?
@rainerbutler @KaiserUDM@AcademicChatter If your goal is to change minds, then you will indeed be frustrated; starting by addressing someone’s fears is more effective, in fact that’s how the misinformation got lodged there (propagandists use this strategy). Only scientists seek truth; most people seek security.
My daughter and I made some halloween 🎃 treats as a tribute to Phineas Gage—the most important lesion patient in the history of #neuroscience.
He survived an accident in which a large iron rod shot through his frontal lobe and impaired his emotional & social capacity.
