The American Academy of Neurology has been relentlessly advocating for months to highlight the unintended consequences of the 2025 proclamation imposing a staggering $100,000 H-1B visa fee, a policy that would severely impact healthcare access across the United States.

Today, there is meaningful progress.

In a strong bipartisan effort, Representatives @RepMikeLawler (R-NY) and Sanford Bishop (D-GA) have introduced the H-1Bs for Physicians and the Healthcare Workforce Act (H.R. 7961). This critical legislation seeks to:

Exempt healthcare providers from the $100,000 visa fee. Cap future H-1B filing fees at $1,500 for physicians and healthcare workers

This is not just policy, it’s about protecting patient care.

With a projected shortage of nearly 86,000 physicians by 2036, and one-third of the neurology workforce comprised of international medical graduates, the stakes are enormous. Without action, access to timely, specialized neurological care, especially for an aging population, will be at serious risk.

Even more concerning, nearly 64% of international physicians serve in Medically Underserved Areas and Health Professional Shortage Areas, meaning restrictive policies would disproportionately impact rural and vulnerable communities.

This bill is not just necessary, it’s urgent.
