CDC is actively working alongside public health partners at the local, state, federal, and international levels, applying world-class expertise to monitor potential Andes virus exposures. The current risk to the public remains low. Here’s how CDC is responding:
- Engaging with state and local health departments to conduct daily health check-ins, ensuring rapid access to testing and care if symptoms develop, and supporting individuals through routine monitoring.
- Tracking three potential exposure groups: repatriated passengers, travelers who returned home before the outbreak was identified, and in-flight contacts who were exposed to symptomatic cases.
- Developing testing protocols and guidance based on the best available scientific evidence.

See enclosed pic. GRAL (Groupe de Recherceh sur la maladie d'Alzheimer) held its 37th congress at Laveran hospital in Marseille, France. Laveran won the 1907 Nobel prize for discovering the cause of Malaria. Honored to serve as vice president of GRAL. The president, Bernard Michel, MD (a neuroloigst in French Armed Fornces with the rank of Brigadier General).
Pleased to welcome Professor Yonas Geda, a leading behavioral neurologist & neuropsychiatrist from the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona, to Addis Ababa.
Prof. Geda, who has authored 190 + peer-reviewed publications, also sat down for an important conversation on mental health with fellow diaspora Dr. Meheret Debebe & ShegerCafe. Anyone interested can find the interviews on YouTube.
We also visited Gergesenon Mental Center for the homeless. Prof Geda together with his wife Tigist Tsegaye & their daughter Abigail Geda, generously donated USD 1,000 to support the center and purchased #GERD bond worth USD 800 in loving memory of late Ezra Geda.
Prof. Geda shared that Ezra was deeply proud of his Ethiopian identity & loved studying Ethiopian history, which inspired the family to also donate to the Association of Ethiopian Historians.
The 2025 medicine laureates identified the immune system’s security guards, regulatory T cells, which prevent immune cells from attacking our own body.
The fundamental knowledge that researchers have gained through the discovery of regulatory T cells and their importance for peripheral immune tolerance, has spurred the development of potential new medical treatments. Mapping of tumours shows that they can attract large numbers of regulatory T cells that protect them from the immune system. Researchers are therefore trying to find ways to dismantle this wall of regulatory T cells, so the immune system can access the tumours.
In autoimmune diseases, researchers are instead trying to promote the formation of more regulatory T cells. In pilot studies, they are giving patients interleukin-2, a substance that makes regulatory T cells thrive. Researchers are also investigating whether interleukin-2 can be used to prevent organs being rejected after transplantation.
Another strategy researchers are testing to slow an overactive immune system is to isolate regulatory T cells from a patient and multiply them in a laboratory. These are then returned to the patient, who will thus have more regulatory T cells in their body. In some cases, researchers also modify the T cells, putting antibodies on their surface that function like an address label. This allows researchers to send these cellular security guards to a transplanted liver or kidney, for example, and protect the organ from being attacked by the immune system.
There are many more examples of how researchers are testing how regulatory T cells can be used to combat diseases. Through their revolutionary discoveries, Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi have provided fundamental knowledge of how the immune system is regulated and kept in check. They have thus conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.

High-level open vascular neurosurgery is needed for complex cases, even in endovascular-dominant places like Europe, so it’s heartening to see it at Univ. Medicine Manheim under Nima Etminan. Also nice to see a collegial culture of mentorship among residents and faculty. Thank you @NimaE for a great visit…
"While upper secondary completion has improved, tertiary enrollment and graduation rates have declined. The study links these setbacks to school closures, conflict and early-life inequalities"
Suzan (Suzan von Amerongen, MD. Soon to be MD, PhD) : congratulations. You have already published your PhD work in Neurology. it is 4am here in Arizona. Watching live your defense https://t.co/f7aZxbeR3w

Prof Fred Meyer is also a down to earth humble person.
Fred : congratulations on having your daughter, Dr Jenna Meyer rotating with you. @MayoClinicNeuro@MayoClinic
Our ability to have our residents rotate at all Mayo Clinic sites allowed Dr Jenna Meyer to rotate with her father, the legendary neurosurgeon and educator Dr. Fred Meyer, for once in a life time father daughter mentorship opportunity. @MayoClinicNeuro@MayoClinic
@Tseday : Indeed Dr Mekbib was a well respected, knowledgeable and competent radiologist at the renowned teaching hospital where both civilians and the military worked. I rotated there as a medical student. Every morning (7am to 8am) all staff used to meet to review key cases. Dr Hailu Kefenie & Dr Gaga Olijo were outstanding internist & surgeon respectively.
@VOAAmharic reports that Dr Andualem Dagne, chief of Surgery and a distinguished surgeon was murdered/ assassinated in front of Ghion hospital in Bahirdar, Ethiopia. I call for prompt investigation & report of this tragedy. @AbiyAhmedAli
