Cloud, explained simply:
• On-prem = you handle everything
• IaaS / PaaS = provider handles hardware; you manage apps & data
• SaaS = provider handles everything; you just use it
This 5-step process is the recipe for turning messy data into insight:
1️⃣ Bring it in: files, apps, and streams flow into one place
2️⃣ Store it: land it in a lake, warehouse, or lakehouse
3️⃣ Clean it: fix errors, remove noise, make it usable
4️⃣ Model it: organize it into tables and relationships so it's ready to analyze
5️⃣ Explore it: charts, dashboards, or AI that answers questions
Tech reality check:
Not all data fits neatly into rows and columns.
📊 The data that does fit that structure is easier to organize and search. We call it structured data.
🌀 Then there's the messier stuff that doesn't. Emails, images, videos, documents. It's harder to pin down and less consistent. We call that unstructured data.
Knowing the difference between the two is a foundational skill in data analytics.
Your photos app can find every picture of your dog in seconds. 🐕
That takes two kinds of AI: machine learning and deep learning.
Machine learning is the part that gets smarter by studying examples.
Feed it enough photos already tagged "dog" and it starts to recognize what dogs tend to look like, without anyone writing rules for floppy ears or a wet nose.
Deep learning handles the harder part: actually making sense of the image.
It starts with the raw pixels and builds up in stages. First it notices simple things like edges and color, then combines those into shapes, then into parts like an ear or a paw, until there's enough to say "that's a dog." Each stage builds on the last, and that stacking is what the "deep" in deep learning means.
