A Chintal resident’s allegation that a group entered her family’s new home and demanded ₹50,000 before allowing the housewarming is the latest in a documented series of complaints involving forced collections at functions and public places in Hyderabad and Telangana.

In a video circulated on September 4, 2026, the woman said the group followed the family, reached the new house before them and demanded money as a condition for allowing them inside. She alleged that they abused the family, ordered her to stop recording and exposed themselves when she continued filming.

But this is not the first such complaint.

Since 2021, there have been repeated allegations of people arriving at weddings, housewarmings, shop openings, restaurants, traffic junctions and trains and demanding money. The cases involve people identified as transgender as well as people whom police alleged were impersonating transgender persons.

𝐀 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

April 19, 2021 — Banjara Hills: Seven people described as transgender were arrested after a cab driver alleged that they stopped his vehicle near Indira Nagar and forcibly took ₹1,000.

August 24, 2021 — Hyderabad: The Telangana Independent Hijra Association sought police action against people it accused of posing as transgender persons and threatening or extorting residents in Madhapur, Hitec City and Kukatpally. This was an association complaint, not a concluded criminal case.

September 13, 2021 — Cyberabad: Around 30 transgender community members protested at the Cyberabad police commissionerate, accusing three community leaders of operating groups that threatened and extracted money from other transgender people. Police directed them to approach Jubilee Hills police, but no subsequent FIR outcome could be located.

December 25–26, 2022 — Banjara Hills: Two groups clashed over territory, money and claims about who was “original” or “fake”. Ten people were arrested after a disturbance at Banjara Hills police station. Reports also cited complaints about forced collections at junctions, functions and shop openings. The arrests were for the police-station incident; the wider allegations were background cited in the reports.

August 18–19, 2023 — North Zone: Hyderabad police apprehended 19 people for allegedly demanding money from commuters, travellers and shopkeepers at Paradise crossroads, Sangeet crossroads, Jubilee Bus Station and other locations. Police described most of them as impersonators and said ₹12,000 and mobile phones were seized. Another report put the number at 17. Transgender activists disputed the police’s method of determining identity through surgery status or medical examination.

September 13, 2023 — Ramnagar/Musheerabad: Police detained one person for allegedly intimidating shopkeepers near a MeeSeva centre, collecting money and behaving obscenely when payment was refused. Police reportedly recovered ₹435. The report called the accused a “fake hijra”, but that identity classification was based on a contested medical assessment.

March 28, 2024 — Kondapur: An X user alleged that a group of 20 to 30 people arrived at a neighbour’s ceremony around 1am and extracted ₹30,000. No FIR or police response could be located. This remains a social-media allegation.

April 11, 2024 — Lothukunta/Trimulgherry: The Commissioner’s Task Force apprehended a transgender woman and a 17-year-old boy for allegedly forcing shopkeepers, vendors and pedestrians to pay. Police alleged that the minor had dressed as a transgender person. Officers reported seizing ₹3,490 and a mobile phone and asked the public to call 100.

April 25, 2024 — Hyderabad: A video from a family function reportedly showed three people demanding ₹25,000 and using obscene language. Hyderabad police responded online by asking for the exact location and advising the complainant to dial 100. No FIR was subsequently located.

June 22–23, 2024 — Madhapur and nearby junctions: Police reportedly detained seven people after complaints of forceful collections from motorists near Madhapur, KBR Park, IKEA, metro stations and traffic intersections. They were produced before the Serilingampally tahsildar, warned and released. No FIR sections were reported.

September 26, 2024 — Karkhana and North Zone: Seven people were arrested for allegedly stopping vehicles, following and intimidating commuters and shopkeepers, demanding money and obstructing traffic. Police said the organiser was a transgender woman who had recruited four men to dress as transgender persons. WhatsApp groups were allegedly used to exchange information about collection locations.

November 22, 2024 — Hyderabad wedding: Journalist Naveena reported that the same collector visited the bride’s and groom’s homes, initially demanded ₹50,000 at each house and threatened to create a disturbance at the wedding venue. The families allegedly paid ₹15,000 at each house. No FIR could be located, and the locality was not identified.

November 25, 2024 — Nandagiri Hills/Jubilee Hills: Seven people were apprehended after allegedly entering a housewarming, demanding money and creating a disturbance when the demand was refused. Jubilee Hills police registered an extortion case under Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

March 4, 2025 — Madhapur: Three people reportedly approached the manager of Taaza Kitchen seeking a Holi “donation”. When he offered ₹500, they allegedly demanded at least ₹50,000. A scuffle followed, and the manager suffered facial injuries. Madhapur police registered a case and began an investigation.

May 12, 2025 — Tata Nagar Express: Four people described by railway police as transgender allegedly surrounded a passenger and robbed him of ₹10,000 after he refused to give them money while they were begging. Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force later arrested them and recovered the cash. This was registered as a robbery case, not a ceremonial-collection complaint.

June 10, 2025 — Kesamudram, Mahabubabad: A group allegedly demanded ₹5,000 at a wedding and argued with and abused the groom’s relatives after they refused. The family called 100. No subsequent FIR or police outcome was reported.

July 21, 2025 — Hyderabad: NewsMeter reported that police decoys caught 15 youths allegedly posing as hijras and demanding money at night in Chaderghat, Chaitanyapuri, Afzalgunj and the Jubilee Bus Station area. An official press note or case numbers could not be located.

November 9–10, 2025 — Cheeriyal/Keesara: Two people allegedly demanded ₹1 lakh at a housewarming. After the house owner refused, a group of around 15 reportedly returned in autos with sticks and stones, damaged or attempted to damage the gate and attacked the owner and his wife. The man reportedly required stitches for a head injury and suffered a shoulder fracture. Six people were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions covering extortion, hurt, intentional insult and criminal intimidation. Reports differ on the precise date and whether some participants were impersonators.

November 20, 2025 — Ameenpur: Police counselled around 60 transgender people after complaints of harassment and forced collections at marriages, housewarmings and other functions. Sangareddy police warned that criminal cases would be registered if coercive collections continued. This was an aggregate police response rather than an individual case.

December 12, 2025 — Hyderabad: Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar met around 250 transgender community members and said police were receiving complaints about groups arriving at homes during auspicious occasions and demanding exorbitant payments. He warned of criminal action and jail while also promising assistance with employment and dignified livelihoods.

January 30, 2026 — Dilsukhnagar–Chaitanyapuri: Seven people were held following complaints about exposure, obscene gestures and public nuisance. Police warned against harassing or extorting pedestrians and motorists. The report did not establish that an extortion charge was registered in this operation.

March 28–April 11, 2026 — Jubilee Hills: A 44-year-old man alleged that a person identified as Gayatri threatened him after an encounter and extracted ₹1.4 lakh and gold ornaments. He approached police after the alleged threats continued. The complaint remains under investigation and is separate from collections at ceremonies or junctions.

September 4, 2026 — Chintal: The housewarming allegation involving a ₹50,000 demand surfaced through a first-person video. No police action or FIR could be confirmed at the time of writing.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar said five alleged-extortion cases were reported in Hyderabad City jurisdiction during 2025. That is the clearest official annual figure available, but it cannot be treated as the total for the Hyderabad metropolitan area or Telangana.

Cyberabad, Rachakonda and Railway Police maintain separate jurisdictions. Complaints settled informally, calls that do not result in FIRs and incidents reported only on social media would not necessarily appear in the Hyderabad City figure.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐨

A voluntary ceremonial gift is a matter of choice. An uninvited demand backed by obstruction, threats, exposure, abuse, property damage or assault is not voluntary.

It should be recorded and investigated under the applicable criminal law, irrespective of the accused person’s identity.

Hyderabad City, Cyberabad, Rachakonda and Railway Police should maintain a common register of complaints involving forced collections at functions, shops, junctions and trains. The register should record calls received, FIRs registered, arrests, repeat offenders, chargesheets and court outcomes.

When a family calls 100 or 112, officers should reach the location, preserve CCTV footage and phone videos, record vehicle numbers, verify digital or cash payments and issue a complaint acknowledgement. Victims should not be informally advised to negotiate or settle.

Police must also examine whether repeat organisers, drivers, local informants or others are facilitating these visits. Claims that information comes from tent-house operators, caterers or neighbourhood contacts remain unproved and should be investigated rather than repeated as fact.

𝐀𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲

Police reports show that some accused were identified as transgender. In other cases, police alleged that men had dressed as transgender persons to facilitate collections.

However, “fake” cannot be decided from a person’s appearance, anatomy or surgery status. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act recognises self-perceived gender identity. Deliberate impersonation linked to an offence may be investigated, but medical examination cannot be used as a shortcut for deciding identity.

The offence must remain the focus: Was money demanded? Was anyone obstructed or threatened? Was property damaged? Was anyone assaulted? Who organised the group, who received the payment, and have the same people been named in earlier complaints?

Government livelihood programmes and community engagement are necessary because begging and exploitative networks cannot be addressed through arrests alone. But welfare measures cannot replace action when coercion or violence is alleged.

Transgender organisations should also cooperate in identifying people who use threats, organise forced collections or exploit vulnerable members of their own community.

Such cooperation would protect both the public and transgender people whose identity is being used by alleged impersonators or whose community is being blamed for the conduct of a minority.
