People love arguing about which programming language is faster.
Rust is faster than Go. Go is better than Node.js. This language, that language…
But honestly, in a large application, the language is often not the problem. The database is.
Your code might execute in a few milliseconds, but then it waits 200ms for a database query to finish.
Maybe there's a missing index. Maybe the query is doing too much work. Maybe several queries could have been one. Or maybe the database is struggling with too many concurrent requests.
You can rewrite your backend in Rust, but that won't magically fix any of these problems.
Of course, the language still matters in some cases. But before arguing about performance, I'd rather check the database queries and find out where the time is actually going. Sometimes, just poor connection pool config can lead to long query times.
Sometimes the problem isn't how fast your code runs. It's how long your code spends waiting.
