#Breaking Tamil Nadu govt admits procedural lapse on Tambaram Corporation tenders. Takes action on key officials.

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated action against officials of Tambaram City Municipal Corporation after a preliminary inquiry found procedural lapses in the tendering of two beautification works, the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department said on Tuesday.

The two works involved construction of a water conservation-themed statue at Sitalapakkam in Zone 4 at an estimated cost of Rs 18.60 lakh and an Ashoka Pillar statue at Perungalathur in the same zone at an estimated cost of Rs 27.30 lakh.

The projects were placed before the municipal council on July 14, with a proposal to execute them using general funds or CSR contributions, and administrative approval was obtained. On July 23, the commissioner authorised the issuance of tender notifications.

However, on July 24, a private company submitted a letter offering to execute both works. The works were subsequently completed by the company, while the tender notification was issued only on August 6.

The government said this was found to be a procedural lapse during a preliminary inquiry based on issues raised by anti-corruption organisation Arappor Iyakkam.

No work order had been issued and no expenditure was incurred from the corporation’s general funds, the government said.

The assistant executive engineer concerned has been placed under suspension, while the municipal commissioner has been relieved from the post and placed on the waiting list. The government has also directed the Director of Municipal Administration to conduct a detailed inquiry.

Further action against all officials found responsible will be taken based on the inquiry report, the government said.
