GeoConfirmed announcement.
Following the ill-advised decision to discontinue support for the Google Earth desktop application and to redirect users to the less functional online version, we are witnessing yet another misstep by Google with far-reaching consequences.
The fight against engagement farmers, disinformation campaigns, and adversarial actors seeking to influence public discourse is already an immense challenge. Satellite imagery has long served as a critical benchmark in countering disinformation and verifying claims, and Google Earth was one of the most important tools in this effort.
It is with great concern that we are already observing individuals exploiting the new Google Earth web tool to make military positions, relabel buildings as schools,... and experiment with manipulating the information environment. In effect, users can now fabricate or alter satellite-derived visuals to support false narratives.
The primary, and perhaps only, practical use of this tool appears to be the creation and dissemination of mis- and disinformation. Users can fabricate scenes or objects that do not exist, or alter real locations to depict false realities, and then distribute these manipulated visuals online as if they were authentic.
Fact-checkers may soon find themselves verifying Google satellite imagery using...Google satellite imagery, rather than fact-checking the original claims.
As some experienced geolocators have noted: “We just realized that geolocators are going to have to waste time geolocating fake Google Earth images now to debunk disinformation. This is fucking chaos.”
We urge @Google to reconsider this decision.
@googleearth should aid the global effort against dis- and misinformation, not inadvertently enable it.
Do not become like X.
Not even Article 4, for a cruise missile landing on NATO territory?
Such a non-reaction would have been unimaginable before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. There would have been strong measures immediately taken.
But, over time, outrages have been normalised and even rationalised to the point where they are no longer considered outrageous.
So I have to ask — what other aggressions would also be greeted with a shrug? Destroying critical infrastructure? Killing people? How many?
The promise to defend every inch has now been broken, so how many more inches are we going to let go?
🇪🇸🇪🇺 ❗️ 96% of the migrants who forced the Spanish border in Ceuta yesterday have already returned to Morocco, according to Spain's Interior Ministry.
Yet another element pointing in one direction: yesterday's events in Ceuta were not an extraordinary migratory wave, but a coordinated hybrid operation, facilitated by Moroccan authorities to put pressure on a European border.
Spanish police unions are already calling it "hybrid war pressure."
As a reminder, this has already happened: Ceuta 2021, Melilla 2022. Same playbook, same neighbour.
Morocco should be held to the same standard as any state that weaponises people against the EU's borders.
Belarus was sanctioned for less.
As I’ve been warning for years, including pronouncing NATO dead last year, a treaty is a piece of paper and is only as strong as the leaders responsible for upholding it. Putin knows this, and Ukraine learned it the hard way once already, in Budapest 1994.
He does it with Russia and now Iran. A desire to cut deals with adversaries who don’t want to cut deals with him leads him to downplay or excuse their malign behavior. In Iran’s case, an adversary he is still at war with and threatening to escalate against. He thinks this gives him leeway for negotiating; his adversaries see it as reason to press on.
North Korea sends troops to wage war in Europe. Iran sends Shahed drones and missiles to Russia to wage war in Europe, and IRGC trainers to Crimea to show them how to use the drones. China helps Russia evade sanctions to wage war in Europe and now, per Reuters, even trains Russian troops to wage war in Europe. Ukraine hits one Iranian cargo ship carrying military equipment and suddenly wars are merging and it might even be World War III.
Top US officials amplifying the disinformation and disruption campaign targeting Europe; currently the US is attempting to destablise Spain and produce a right wing ecosystem to oust the current government.
The campaign mirrors Russia's strategy, is being pushed by Trump admin.
Google Earth has launched a new AI tool which allows users to create fake satellite images.
A collapsed Eiffel Tower, a sinkhole swallowing the Great Pyramid of Giza and Russian tanks in Kyiv were among images BBC Verify created when testing the feature.

We have detected an intensive Russian propaganda campaign across Europe using pictures from Ceuta to sow destabilization.
There have been more than 1,500 publications on outlets identified by analysts as a pro-Russian network, led by Pravda and RT. Pravda Spanish has posted almost 300 of them. Every language edition of RT has pushed more than 25 news items on the issue.
For years, Moscow has used migration and other sensitive topics to stoke fear and destabilize European countries.
This is not about the situation itself, but about the way Russia tries to exploit any topic that can benefit its agenda. The only way to protect the public from this interference is to cut it off.
All Russian propaganda resources should be completely banned in every European country that takes its national security seriously.
