Today, I officially initiate the process leading to the election of the new Director General of @unesco by sending a letter inviting Member States to present their candidates.
The letter has just been sent.
“We have been so stupid […] we have this beautiful planet, and we have been systematically destroying it”
[intervention of Dr @JaneGoodallInst, @unesco Executive Board]
“We are leaving a terrible heritage to our children and their children […] we have five years to really start working and to move to the opposite direction”
[intervention of Dr @JaneGoodallInst, @unesco Executive Board]
« Une personne âgée qui meurt, c’est comme une bibliothèque qui brûle ». Jamais ces mots ne seront aussi justes que pour décrire la disparition du Professeur Amadou Mahtar Mbow, Directeur général de l’UNESCO entre 1974 et 1987.
@KishoreRao10@elounasso@UNESCO You see… I don’t use very much X and I posted (then removed) what I thought it was a simple reply to you…
Hope to see you in Goa, in Paris or elsewhere
Great privilege to exchange with the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General @AminaJMohammed at the Executive Board of @unesco .
What she said on how to accelerate @SDG2030 is definitely food for thought
“Please remember that with good will, it is always possible to find common grounds and to focus on what unites us, rather than what divides us” (Intervention by the Chairperson of the #UNESCOExBd at the opening of the #219EX)
“Transform rhetoric into action, rendering our impact palpable and meaningful” […] “let us discern between the important and the indispensable in the context of today’s world” “As governing body of our Organization, the Executive Board should control its own agenda”
“Artificial Intelligence is changing everything “ […] “it is true that it can be dangerous if we are not careful. But it can be great if we are. Let us not forget that” (Intervention by the Chairperson of the #UNESCOExBd at the opening of the #219EX)
“The ongoing conflicts claim countless civilian lives, leaving behind shattered communities. Amidst this chaos, children endure unimaginable hardships, robbed of their innocence” (Intervention by the Chairperson of the #UNESCOExBd at the opening of the #219EX)
Today in Room XI detailed presentation by the South Africa’s Auditor General and @UNESCO external auditor on its working methodology followed by Q&A session #UNESCOExBd#219EX

I’m devastated by this news. Jukka was my mentor and friend for more than 30 years, and I am where I am only because he took a chance and hired me in 1996 to work on the first ITUC course. The heritage community has lost a giant today, and I have no words to express my grief.
The Landmarks of the Ancient Kingdom of Saba in Marib #yemen has just been inscribed on the #WorldHeritage List & on the List of WH in Danger #unesco
Happy Birthday to #unesco World Heritage Convention that turns 50 and to the #worldheritage Centre that is 30. We wish you a lot of Credibility and Conservation for the years to come.
After 4 years of difficult debates the reflection on sites of memory associated with recent conflicts is ended. This is a major achievement for the #worldheritage Convention & x #unesco. Vera Lacoeuilhe’s wise chairmanship made possible to get a positive outcome @VeraForReform
