Eighteen years ago, two university sweethearts made a quiet decision the world would later call marriage, but which was a covenant of conviction, to build something that could outlast the fashions of romance and the fatigue of routine.

We met as students, idealistic and unfinished, full of borrowed opinions and untested dreams. We did not know then that love, like faith, is not a feeling you fall into and stay in forever. It is a discipline you return to, morning after morning, long after the poetry of courtship has matured into the prose of partnership.

Eighteen years is not a fairy tale. It is a ledger of arguments resolved before sunset, ambitions deferred and later fulfilled together, and two people who chose, repeatedly, to remain reasonable when it would have been easier to be right. Marriage done honestly should not create the impression of the absence of conflict but emphasize the presence of respect strong enough to survive it.

We built a home, not merely a house with walls and routines, but a small republic governed by trust, where friendship outranks formality and faith is architecture, rather than mere decoration. It has tried to model that stability is not the enemy of ambition, that two people can hold each other accountable and still hold each other close, and that real love is a form of civic responsibility. It teaches the next generation what commitment looks like when no one is watching and nothing is trending.

The lesson of eighteen years to us is that love does not need permission to be extraordinary. It needs only two people willing to keep choosing each other honestly, even on the days that offer no applause. Here’s to the friendship that came before the romance, the faith that outlasted the fear, and the home that continues quietly, deliberately, to make its small, positive dent on the world.

Today was a beautiful celebration of love and new beginnings as Innocent and Uvietobore were joined in holy matrimony at Living Faith Church, Asaba.

Edith and I were delighted to join His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, High Chief (Dr.) Broderick Arigbodi, their families, and loved ones on this special occasion.

We congratulate both families and pray that God blesses the union with love, peace, understanding, and enduring happiness.
