My team built a VPN at Google. Summary of my advice on VPNs:
1) Never ever use a free VPN.
2) Be wary of any influencer-marketed VPNs with big discounts. Up to you but I wouldn’t use Nord/Express/etc based in Lithuania/Cyprus/Panama.
3) Mullvad is the best consumer VPN and it’s not even close. (more below)
I think @ProtonPrivacy should publish a detailed transparency report about the whole @phrack thing. If it really was ToS then it would be immediately clear.
The largest change in 10 years of @AlgoVPN just shipped. We comprehensively reduced logging for privacy enhancement across the deployed server:

We need help testing one last mega-PR: a complete rewrite of the @AlgoVPN packaging system to use uv. The UX is so much better. Please try checkout the code from this PR and leave a comment if it works:

I made my @AlgoVPN over a year ago in Octoberish 2021. I can't recommend it enough. If you have an AWS account and can use AWS somewhat decently, you can have a nice private VPN with adblocking, if you don't need Tor. It's fast and reasonably private, and doesn't get flagged.
Thought I was really clever setting up an Algo server in a foreign country to bypass Geo restrictions to watch a show.
Forgot the show might not have English subtitles if it's streaming in its native country...
Afterwards, find that it's already on YouTube with English subs 🤦🏻♂️
@rnjn Great list @rnjn.
One addition to this... consider @AlgoVPN which is an open-source project - a bunch of ansible scripts - that sets up a private VPN on any cloud just for you. https://t.co/eAPCIU4ZL1

To me, this is a massive story that just flew under the radar. The consolidation of commercial VPNs under a single shady banner alone should be cause for alarm, worse yet when they have a reputation for malware distribution.

Questions to ask to determine if a VPN is a great match for you:
1. Do I have elevated threat model?
2. Do I trust VPN over ISP to handle data of which sites I use?
3. Are sites I navigate to a secret for me?
Thanks @josephfcox@motherboard for discussing. https://t.co/jenmEf3Bur
The at least until recently CIO of big VPN ExpressVPN is one of the three former U.S. intelligence operatives who agreed today not to fight charges they illegally helped UAE hack people. Kind of makes you think.
The FBI ran an anonymous phone company to catch criminals. The real question is now, which VPN providers do we think are ran by some government agency? 👀
