Pakistan’s federal government imposes emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sidelining the PTI-led provincial government after talks collapse and ahead of protests over Imran Khan’s jailing, citing border security fears.
Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid reports.
On October 11, Pakistan's government used emergency powers to end PTI's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which critics read as the removal of the military establishment's main political rival, in a country with a weak democratic record and persistent rights-group concerns over press freedom and political repression.
The move came as the party's campaign for Imran Khan's release gathered force. Officially it was a response to terrorism and a breakdown of law and order, but critics read it as the removal of the only institutional base of the establishment's main political rival, achieved by constitutional means rather than force.

Junaid Akbar got arrested
Sohail Afridi got arrested
Shahid Khattak got arrested
But are you all arrested? Why are we always blaming PTI leadership to hide our own cowardice? Enough of such chutiya insafis. They did what they could. They are not gorilla fighters and they do not command an army. Turks came out without a leader. If you cannot come out and then stop ranting like a bitch. Own your cowardice.
Sohail Afridi, the former Chief Minister of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Junaid Akbar, provincial president of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have reportedly been arrested, according to MNA Shahid Khattak.
The reported arrests follow the imposition of emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which suspended the PTI-led provincial government. Further details about their detention are awaited.
