This legislative session was a tough one on common good, common sense and decency.
Our kids deserve better.
We all deserve better.
👎Underfunding mental & public health needs
👎Eliminating a 13th check for retirees
👎Underfunding public schools
👎And this👇
Remember, the current budget leaves $2.7 billion in reserves. If more money is added for traditional public schools in a new budget, it will most likely come from that, and not the money to expand private school vouchers for the wealthy.
The Senate is back in session and SB 486 is again on the calendar today for a vote to concur.
As a reminder, a "yes" vote sends the bill to the governor. A "no" vote sends the bill to conference committee. For the past two sessions Sen. Rogers has passed on calling the bill.
Those pesky teachers being a voice for students! A draft study committee report recommends stripping away teacher voice by no longer requiring superintendents to discuss with teachers:
❌Student Discipline
❌Student-teacher ratios
❌Class sizes
❌Student remediation needs
& more.
Thank you to all our families, staff and community friends who joined us tonight for the Back to School Stadium BASH. Beaver Stadium is officially open and we couldn’t be more excited for the wonderful memories that will be made here for many years to come
❤️
We will miss you in this role, @mjslaby!! On behalf of educators, thank you for your honest and accurate reporting on the state of public education in Indiana, especially us in HamCo!
So that was my last school board live tweet thread in this role. Thanks to everyone who followed along on these threads. I so appreciate it. And I’ll still be working in education journalism at @ChalkbeatIN so don’t unfollow me- I’m still around and want to know what’s going on.
Kevin was a fierce supporter of public education and all of his students. This weekend we lost an educator, a friend, a colleague, and an advocate. Rest In Peace, friend. @ISTAmembers@NobForum
I was honored this morning to be one of the four recipients of the 2022 @ISTAmembers “Friend of Education” award and be recognized for my support of public education alongside my colleagues Senators Melton, Yoder, and JD Ford.
Breaking News: Amazon workers voted to unionize at a massive New York warehouse, in a stunning win for a campaign targeting the second-largest employer in the U.S. and one of the biggest victories for organized labor in a generation. https://t.co/Jy5WDa21j4
So happy to report that HB 1134 - which would have contributed to our teacher shortage, stifled classroom conversations and limited access to counseling services for students - has died today. Thank you to the hundreds who came out and thousands who spoke against this bill.
Tonight, HB 1134 died on second reading deadline. Thank you to all of the educators, students, parents and Hoosiers who shared their concerns about this legislation throughout the process. We must stay vigilant moving forward to ensure this bill doesn't come back.
I ❤️ my Union brothers and sisters who fight for public schools in Indiana General Assembly every day. Keith Clock @keithclock, Roni Embry @RoniEmbry, John McNeill and Gail Zeheralis - these folks are Rock Stars. Celebrate tonight and back to work tomorrow! #IamISTA@ISTAmembers
