The Most Accurate Map of the Seafloor

NASA used the SWOT satellite to study the Earth's ocean floor in detail and create the most accurate map of it. The animation covers regions off the coast of Mexico, South America, and the Antarctic Peninsula.

SWOT technology records microscopic changes in gravity — underwater mountains and volcanoes create barely noticeable bulges on the ocean surface. By analyzing this data, scientists found that 70% of the ocean floor is covered with abyssal hills. These are small underwater elevations.

The data will help improve submarine navigation, as well as optimize the laying of telecommunications cables that connect continents and provide global Internet communications.
