On my lapel I wear a pin depicting a canary in a birdcage, given to me decades ago by a steelworker at a Workers’ Memorial Day rally in Lorain.

At the turn of the last century, coal miners took the canary down into the mines with them to warn them of poisonous gasses, because in those days, they didn’t have a union strong enough or a government that cared enough to look out for them.

When I first came to the Senate, I wore the official Senate pin for a couple of days, but it didn’t feel right. So I took it off and I put my canary pin back on. I’ve worn it every day since, and I’m not taking it off.

I will always believe that when you love this country, you fight for the people who make it work. I will never give up that fight.

I strongly feel Merrick Garland should be giving a press conference every hour and deploying every resource the Justice Department has in conjunction with the FBI to find out where all of these despicable texts are coming from. Yesterday. Right now. Immediately.

@RFentonMD Structural racism is 1000% a huge component of it. Notably, working class/lower-middle class white dems that I know are not surprised, so I wonder if some of it isn't also economic privilege. Being insulated from real problems. Having a safety net under you at all times, etc.

I do think we need to assess how we communicate with other people but I also am just not really interested in this wild blame game we are currently playing - we have so much to do, little time to do it, and bigger fish to fry.
