There is a famous legend about the inventor of chess. When he presented the game to the king, the king was so impressed that he offered the inventor any reward he wanted.

The inventor asked for a simple request. Place one grain of rice on the first square of the chessboard. Then double it on the second square. Double again on the third. And so on for all 64 squares.

The king laughed at what seemed like a modest request and agreed immediately. But by the 20th square, the number had grown to over one million grains. By the 40th square, it was over one trillion. By the 64th square, the total amount of rice exceeded the entire world's production.

The king could not fulfill the request. The inventor had demonstrated the power of exponential growth using nothing but patience and doubling.

This is exactly how compound interest works on your investments. The first few years feel like nothing is happening. N10,000 becomes N11,800. Then N13,924. Boring. But by year 20, the growth accelerates so dramatically that the numbers become difficult to believe. N10,000 becomes N273,930. Same money. Same rate. Just time doing its work.
