“Someone in my house had to be.”
She hasn’t taken her eyes off him, disdain and anger in her eyes, mixed with disgust from their first altercation, before Lex ever knew who the man in front of her was.
“Why do you care?”
He stares at him for a moment before bursting into laughter. It’s not happy.
“What a wounded puppy. You used to have a backbone”.
It’s a hateful deflection.
—, long, long time, Miss Holloway. Why, you buyin’?”
He leans forward, hands in his pockets, and the pins in /his/ jacket catch the light.
He wouldn’t mind, getting to know her. See what she’s really like, under all that bravado. What would happen if they could get along?
It is /definitely/ common sense not to let your guard down with Wilbur in sight, but his posture’s relaxed, and he’s in no rush.
The question makes him smirk. It sounds so simple. Coffee. It’s been ages since he’s thought of food, of his own humanity.
“It’s been a long —
“Like that would ever happen.”
She shakes her head. A pang in her heart tells her that perhaps she was being too aggressive, but it was quickly overcome by common sense and her aged survival instincts.
“When /was/ the last time you had a coffee, Wilbur?”
She tilts her head.
Weak or small, huh? He can work with that.
He tilts his head, vaguely gesturing at Daniel’s.
“Got a headache? Something that just won’t quit? A little voice in your mind telling you you’re full of it?”
He whispers, as if telling a secret.
“It’s right, you know”.
Daniel kept himself up with one hand and used the other to hold his head.
“Uh yeah something like that.. but how the hell do *you* know that…?”
He tried to stop himself from panting and his heart from beating rapidly. He didn’t want to look weak, or small.
“Hah! Money. It’s always the same with you, isn’t it?”
He’s not talking about her, of course. It’s the greed coursing through the world’s veins. It’s what doomed them in the first place.
He winks.
“Wouldn’t you like to be stronger? To stop being called a bother?”
Steph stared at the new items that had just appeared in his hands. How in earth-?
“Listen. If you want money, that’s not going to work.” She crossed her arms, backing away from him. “What kind of help do you mean…?” She asked now curious.
He doesn’t walk back, but straightens his body and raises his hands, all smiles.
“Woah, hey! I was just checking on you, pal. You seem to be… going through something”.
Clear eyes stare down at the kid, curious and piercing. He /can/ hear something. It’s barely a whisper, —
The veil between dreams and reality was especially thin with Daniel, Wilbur thought, as he walked towards him. Looking down, he could feel the potential in him. The anger. It looked a lot like his own, once.
He crouches, stares. Plasters on a big grin.
“You okay, kid?”
—
let a headache get in his way. At least that’s what he thought before he found himself in the fetal position, clutching his head.
The only thing he could make out through the pain was the figure of a man. A seemingly familiar man dressed in denim.
“You /can’t/ just be normal, Lex”.
He still doesn’t walk toward her, just looks at them with feigned understanding. As if he remembered what it was like, just… being a man.
“There’s no way out, but through. Wouldn’t you like to see the quickest route? Wouldn’t you like to —
