The returns available to them were the same
What changed was the default
Before, employees had to actively enroll in the retirement plan
After, they were enrolled automatically unless they chose to opt out
That sounds like a boring administrative detail
But it changed the financial behavior of almost half the workforce
And this is where the experiment gets much more interesting
We like to think our financial lives are built from conscious decisions:
Should I save this month?
Should I invest?
Should I buy this?
Should I work another hour?
But a surprising amount of behavior happens before that internal debate even begins
Defaults, friction, timing, immediate rewards and the environment around a decision can quietly push us toward one option over another
Sometimes the difference between a good financial habit and a bad one isn’t more discipline
It’s which behavior requires effort — and which one happens automatically
And once you notice that, you start seeing the same mechanism almost everywhere money is involved
Your brain starts building itself about 3 weeks after conception — and parts of it are still being remodeled well into your 20s
That means the brain you had at 15, 20, or even 25 was not simply a smaller version of the brain you have now
It was operating under a different set of constraints
During development, the brain actually creates more connections than it intends to keep. Some are strengthened through use, while others are gradually eliminated through a process known as synaptic pruning
And that refinement doesn’t stop when childhood ends
Through adolescence and into early adulthood, myelination continues — insulating neural pathways and making communication between different brain regions faster and more efficient. In some areas, this process can continue into the third decade of life
But there’s an interesting trade-off hidden inside that process
As the brain becomes more efficient and specialized, some of the extreme flexibility of childhood gradually decreases
Then aging introduces an entirely different set of changes — except those changes don’t affect every ability equally
Some mental abilities decline
Others can remain surprisingly resilient for decades
The human brain isn’t something that finishes developing and then simply gets older
It keeps rebuilding itself throughout your entire life
